What to do with old cigars?

My father-in-law passed away earlier this year, and every time my wife and son go visit her mom, they seem to bring home more and more of his stuff. This past week, my son brought back a ton of cigars, something like 8 boxes in all. I looked them up online, and these are all a bit costly--or at...

Standing water in the back yard, need advice

My father-in-law passed away a month ago, and since then, my wife and I have been helping my mother-in-law get everything in order. One thing that I'm trying to help her with is the back yard. It's really a mess, but we're making progress. One thing that I'm not sure how to handle is the...

    How to take screen captures?

I've spent most of this evening checking here and elsewhere for a way to take screen captures that won't require me buying any new software, but haven't had any luck so far. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Ron Jeremy in Jesus Christ Superstar

I think it was probably about two years ago when I first heard that Ron Jeremy had an uncredited appearance in Jesus Christ Superstar. I finally picked up the DVD today, and watched it tonight. I couldn't pick him out, so I thought I'd ask if anyone here knew where in the movie he appears...

Now that Cheaper by the Dozen is being remade...

What are the chances of the original being released on DVD? My mother has been bugging me for years to get her a copy of this on VHS or DVD, but neither of is is willing to pay the price it goes for on Ebay. The remake, starring Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, Tom Welling, Piper Perabo & Hillary...

    1910 Edison Frankenstein on DVD?

Alois Detlaff screened his print (the only known surviving copy) of the 1910 Frankenstein on 4/27 at the Landmark Loew's in New Jersey. Following the showing, he sold copies of it on DVD, and is now apparently selling them to the general public through his company, A.D. Ventures. Included on the...

How's the quality of the non-Mei Ah Kurosawa HK DVD's?

I've seen these on Ebay several times, but haven't spoken to anyone who owns them. They come in black & white cases, and my main interest in them is that they have The Idiot, Scandal, and The Quiet Duel, which are not even available from Mei-Ah. I was hoping somebody here might have some insight...

    Happiness of the Katakuris

I just received my R3 copy of this in the mail today, and instantly sat down to watch it. For those who haven't seen it, I'll say that it's definitely one of the most interesting movies I've ever seen. I enjoyed it, but I'd imagine a lot of people would walk away from this scratching their heads...

DVD's with holes drilled in the cases: What's up with that?

I got thinking about this a while back after posting in a thread about bootlegs, then thought about it again after reading the most recent thread on DVD's on Ebay. A lady I used to work with was buying DVD's from one of her mother's friends for $10 apiece. Basically, it turned out that most of...

    I've got bees. Any suggestions?

A couple months ago, I started work on cutting down the trees in the backyard. They're actually big, overgrown bushes, so it's necessary to get the branches out of the way so I can cut them down at the stump. Due to a lot of different factors, this wasn't something I could get done in one day...

    Any Schoolhouse Rock reviews?

I'm eagerly anticipating this release next week! I've done a little searching, but haven't found any reviews yet. This will definitely receive a lot of play in our house, so I'm curious to hear how well they did on it.

Are stores allowed to play DVD's before their street date?

I know the studios frown strongly on stores breaking street date on DVD sales, but what about playing the DVD on their public sets prior to the street date? The reason I ask is that I was at two different stores yesterday that were playing LOTR on the sets set up throughout the store. While I...

    Is RealOne worth the upgrade?

Up until a few days ago, I was using Real Jukebox to play music on my PC. Ever since I got over 3000 tracks, though, it's been messing up regularly. I'm up to over 3600 tracks, and it doesn't seem able to handle that many. I switched back to my RIO Audio Manager, and that also seems unable to...

    What's wrong with my Amelie?

We picked up Amelie at Target over the weekend. When I try to play it in my Apex 3201, it stops at the 23 second mark on the startup (FBI warning, etc.). I then hit play, and the movie plays with the English language commentary playing. There is no way to turn it off--I try from the special...

Should I get my DVD player cleaned at Best Buy?

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, and a search didn't turn anything up, so I thought I'd ask. Our DVD player in the bedroom, which is the most used, has been freezing up in spots lately. There's nothing wrong with the discs, and if I scan back and play it over, it usually plays...

Saw To Have & Have Not on the big screen tonight...

I had never seen this previously, and I was blown away. The Victoria Theatre, which is a traditional stage theatre, has a summer movie series every year. They have free soda & popcorn prior to the movie, live music, a short (this year it's a cartoon, last year it was a Shadow serial), then a...

    AFI's 100 Years, 100 Musicals?

I've enjoyed the AFI's specials so far, and was wondering why they've not yet done one on musicals. I dropped them a line yesterday and received the following response: Thank you for your interest in the American Film Institute. This has been proposed. A decision will be made and announced in...

    Anyone try a flat hose?

I've seen the ads and infomercials several times now, and I was wondering if anyone had tried one. I know there are at least two that they advertise. My wife seldom puts the hose away, and we've (meaning "she's") destroyed 3 hoses over the last 6 years through various means. This would be a...

    Differences in Full Monty soundtracks?

I watched Full Monty last night with the UK soundtrack. I didn't notice any difference between it an the US version. What am I missing?

Most prized collectible you've missed out on...

Are there any occasions where you've had the opportunity to buy something valuable, and for reasons either within or out of your controlled, had to pass? For me, one of the most distressing is the copy of Playboy #1 I missed out on when I was 13, which I've already chronicled here, which is...

    Patrick Dempsey classics on DVD

I finished watching Can't Buy Me Love on TBS earlier today, then immediately ordered a double anchovy pizza and ran to the computer to check to see if this or Patrick Dempsey's other classic film (Loverboy) were available on DVD. While neither are currently available, I did find out that Can't...

Zatoichi: Any opinions on the movies or DVD's?

I believe the first two installments came out this past week. I've thought about picking them up and was wondering if anyone had scene them, or had any opinions on the movies/transfers.

Does anyone know if the Head DVD is OAR?

I've been contemplating getting the Monkees' "classic" Head for some time now. I know it's a full-frame transfer, but I don't know what the OAR of the film is. I've read from varying sources that it's anything from 1:33/1, to 2:35/1. IMDB doesn't list any technical specs for it, so I'm hoping...

    What does IIRC mean?

Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I've seen it typed in various message boards over the last 10-12 years, and never did know what it meant. I've seen it much more often recently, and my curiosity finally got the best of me, so I had to ask. And, for what it's worth, I did a search...

DVD Profiler question: Can't add any DVD's to my collection...

Not sure if this is the best place for this, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I tried adding a DVD yesterday (Logan's Run, picked up at Sam's club for 5.98), and it wouldn't accept it. It acts as though it adds it, doesn't take any errors, but the DVD never shows up. I...

Who else hasn't gotten their Total Movie DVD's?

I was suspecting that it was taking a bit long to receive these, so I called this past Friday. I found out that mine shipped out on March 29th, the same day as the most recent issue. I received the magazine several weeks ago, but no DVD's yet. I'm hoping this is due to slow mail, and not...

    My first non-R1 DVD!

Last year, as my wife's pregnancy advanced, she suffered from terrible swelling, and ended up out of work, having to spend most of her time in bed to help relieve her condition. To ease her uncomfortable situation, I purchased a DVD player for the bedroom. At the time, I didn't think much of the...

David Lean's _Brief Encounter_: Did I make the right choice?

After selling some old video games yesterday, I purchased the Criterion edition of David Lean's Brief Encounter. It was a tossup between this and Seventh Seal. These are both movies I've been wanting to see for quite some time, but was torn over which one to actually purchase. Any opinions on...

Found Can't Stop the Music early!

Although I should be embarrassed to admit that I bought it. Oddly enough, I found it at a used store, so somebody obviously found it even earlier than I did, then did the smart thing and got rid of it. I'll be watching it later, and will chime back in with my opinions of this cinematic masterpiece.

    Great find!

Today, I was lucky enough to run to a local second-hand shop that deals in used CD's, DVD's, videos, and video games. I found The Passion of Joan of Arc Criterion Collection for $15! This is the third CC disc I've found there, the others being Silence of the Lambs and Robocop. All 3 for $45 total!
