    UPS Woes

Here is a little rundown of what happened: Sold a relatively new laptop computer on Ebay last December ($1k+). Received the money from buyer. Shipped laptop in original shipping box which was placed inside another larger box with foam peanuts all around, about 5-6” of protection all around...

    Question about home insurance

I wasn't able to find this specific details anywhere, but is digital photography now acceptable as proof of ownership after a fire/theft? Remember hearing ways back that it was not and photographs needed to be on 'film'.

    Acoustic Foam

Anybody know of a source for the egg crate foam? Specialty stores (i.e. audio) charge way too much, and their stuff is no different from what is used for packing. I'm looking for a large quantity so a lower price per sq/ft is important. Thanks in advance! :emoji_thumbsup:

    eMail Box Help

I'm looking to get a permanent account that will not be defunct any time soon  So much of life is dependant on email that when it goes down it's a major hassle. What I'm looking for: 1.) Both POP3 & web based access to the account 2.) Preferably pay service as it will be more...

    Proper etiquette...

I was always under the impression that using 3rd person pronouns in the presence of the person was inappropriate, but rarely heard anyone follow this rule. Simplistic example: You are in the room with Bob and you answer the phone, the caller asks if Bob is there. Proper would be to say A.)...

    Playing around with an ammeter...

I just tried measuring different stuff around the house with a Fluke AC ammeter, and most devices were right on the spot. Microwave at 2Kw, incandescent light bulbs were showing within 1w of their rating. Even the 12v outside lighting system showed perfect reading. Pretty accurate throughout the...

    Job title?

This is to all the computer people: how do you title your job in different conversations? Just need some snazzy ideas as PC Analyst is a bit cryptic to most, and “computer guy” is too informal. What’s a good and descriptive term for broad computer skills?

Got rearended, .... and ouch! (w/pics)

So I'm stopped at this yield sign on the ramp onto another major street, looking for the traffic to clear. I'm obviously leaning forward with my head turned back to see the cars. Then BAM! A new VW Beetle rams me from behind, and my head goes into the handle near the windshield. The impact...

How do utility companies read meters?

This always bugged me. There are "phone like" wires coming off water and gas meters and going somewhere I don't know. The meters themselves look like very crude industrial devices, with big bolts in them and don't seem like they can have sophisticated dialing electronics inside. And I certainly...

eBAY scam. Quite ingenious, but I fell for it, sort of.

Here's how it works. A seller with a high 100+ positive rating lists brand new items for sale at relatively good prices. Auction states the item is sent from warehouses. Nothing yet to throw flags up, since volume sellers do that. Once the auction is over, a payment to the seller is made...

Will a magnetically unshielded subwoofer cause permanent damage to a CRT?

I can see slight discolorations when moving the subwoofer around and the picture is still, but the effect is virtually invisible without knowing what to look for. Doesn't bother me in the least, but will prolonged exposure to the magnetic field from the sub do any irreversible damage to the TV...

    Ideas for sub finish?

I'm refinishing a sub that had an oak veneer. Just wasn't durable enough for my OCD. I need something that will look the same in 20 years :) DIY veneer didn't live up. Right now I'm thinking contact cement + router trimmed counter top laminate. Any other options?

Clara Harris gets 20 years in Mercedes murder.

Am I the only one who thinks the punishment doesn't fit the crime here? Come on, she killed a cheating husband, how many time has that happened in history? She is not a murderer that needs to be isolated! I'm willing to bet she had an impeccable criminal record up until now, is mentally...

    EZpass Question

Hey folks, I was wondering if anyone could help me with finding some info on the EZPass systems implemented in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. What I'm looking for is information how the system works from the users perspective, how where when those devices are purchased, where placed in the car...

    Sources for foam?

I'm basically looking for a flat sheet of open cell foam maybe 1/8" to 1/4" thickness, for DIY, preferably medium gray. Any online sources, or even better, local stores where you seen foam sell at? After visiting a few local hardware stores (Ace, Sears, Home Depot...) and after spending about a...

Tips/Tricks for affixing drivers and plate amps in DIY speakers ...

I'm currently building a DIY sub and getting closer and closer to the stage of mounting the driver and plate amp to the box, but the problem is with using bolts and nuts to do it. I'm not very fond of screws, as the MDF tends to not hold the screw after a few screw removals, and screws don't...

    Wood veneer pricing...

Interested what you folks paid for veneer when doing some DIY work… I was quoted by a few places for ‘red oak’, one place wanted $2.70/sq.ft. for single ply paper backed, same place $2.91/sq.ft. for dual ply. Another lumber yard was asking $1.61 for single ply paper backed in strips no wider...

Driver recommendation for a DIY sub...

I'm looking for a decent 10" at about 0-120$/each, that would be a good performer from a box no larger than 1.2 cu.ft. or so and filling up 30 to 35hz-55hz relatively accurately, of course going lower than "30 to 35" is ok too :)This sub will be going into a medium room sized about 1800 cu.ft...
