This is to all the computer people: how do you title your job in different conversations? Just need some snazzy ideas as PC Analyst is a bit cryptic to most, and “computer guy” is too informal. What’s a good and descriptive term for broad computer skills?

I'm with you, it's hard to describe to people outside of IT. Instead of an actual title, I stick with descriptors such as "I manage the company's servers" or "I maintain the corporate network". Seems to work well enough.

'ow about "I'm the BOFH" ;)

you can sort of snarl it thru clenched teeth, and laugh manically afterwards!

Let's see where I work we were considered Customer Engineers and now we are labeled as "Technicians".
The other half well sure refers to me as the "IT GEEK".
Too many names for the general PC Tech field.

The hardest part of my job was to figure out how to say what I do on my business card in 5 words or less :D

It finally ended up as "Artist/Author of New Media" - I'm not thrilled with it because it still doesn't fully describe every facet of what I do, but I do like the fact that it sums up the fact that I create things through the use of electronics.

Has anyone ever gotten the email "You know you're in corporate America when..."

one of the replies was: "Your family and friends refer to your job as 'works with computers'" :D

them: What do you do?

me: I'm a programmer/analyst

them: so, then what do you do?

me: uh... um...

Reminds me of Office Space - " What would you say you DO here, at Initech"

Try telling people you're a Geographic Informations Systems Specialist and see what expressions you get...I usually end up just saying I work with computerized maps which most then assume I mean CAD which is totally off but its better then "I work with computers";)

That is so true. I say Software Engineer, and then look at the blank stares then just say programmer. They understand that, but then they ask again, what do you do. That takes a little longer to explain.

When I was laid off (in '96), I was at unemployment and they needed to code my job description. I looked through this book that was twice the size of a phone book to find my job title, but there was nothing even remotely close.

I finally had to settle with "Graphic Deisnger" :frowning: Hopefully the books have been updated.
