MR,
The Whise stuff...:)
A WHISE did exceptionally well for Don Keele a couple years ago in AUDIO...I think it might have been a "324" model? (what determines the model name of the WHISE anyway?)
I like your link...four 15s...>500 pounds...passive. I remember when "PAM" first came out...half the guys I talked too thought it was a huge step forward...sure to set a new standard. But a few guys were sure Bose was going to go ape-shi* over the bandpass design of the Whise too. I really don't know enough details of Whise to know if either comment has current merit.
MP,
>>>Tom V,
Can you tell us what you've found through your experiments with PRs? I'm under the impression that you've tried them a lot and found higher distortion or something.

Tom V, thanks for the information. I don't see myself having enough money for a PR sub anytime soon but hey, what the heck.

I'd guess that fiberboard tube enclosures/ports are much cheaper to implement than a box/PR's for a manufacturer looking to maximize profit at a price point or a hobbyist looking to boom on the cheap.

Jack,

Yup..PRs cost money,a lot more than a port. But I haven't even considered the cost factor in any of my replies. Cylinders are the same as boxes....you can build them using generic sonotube, 3/4" raw MDF,some cheap grill cloth wrapping and no grille(as cheap as possible) or you can eat a ton of margin and use 1.5" BIRCH endcaps, a baseplate assembly to maximize stability, heavy duty fabric covering, built to spec enclosure cylinders(NOT sonotubing), built in grille, ect, ect. As with all things in the industry...you target the potential customer and try to give them more for less.

The cool thing about DIYing is each person can look at the extremes of production enclosures out there and decide what they like about them and what they don't...and design/build accordingly.
