Old Time Rock & Roll is a classic rock song, not filler
Oh, I don't think it's a bad song. I just felt that in the context of the list, it felt like filler. There were many memorable movie songs that could've fit in better. But hey, it was no. 100, so no biggie.

I don't think the Rocky song should have been there, nor Fight the Power, Buttons and Bows, Hakuna Matata, or Aquarius....

Missing but I think should have been there:

1.Chim Chim Cher'ee
2.Somewhere Out There
3.Love is a Many Splendored Thing
4.You're the One that I Want (in place of Summer Nights)
5.All of My Life from Tootsie
6.How Deep is Your Love from Saturday Night Fever
7.Oklahoma!
8.Easter Parade
9.Circle of Life
Take My Breath Away from Top Gun
10.Lookin' For Love from Urban Cowboy

...I am absolutely thrilled that Over the Rainbow was Number One.....Congrats to Judy, Harold Arlen, and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg.

While it was good and proper to see Streisand, Kelly, Garland, and Astaire they didn't need several songs each.
I also thought the choices tended to highlight the performance and quality of the song over the movie moment. Broadway songs seemed a favorite.
While I agree pretty much with the top ten, I would have liked to see a greater variety of genres as well as eras. Only the occasional song like "Lose Yourself," "Born to Be Wild," and "Mrs. Robinson" broke up the monotony of slower songs that drove their respective movies to a halt rather than enhanced them.

"From the AFI Press Release....'Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah (SONG OF THE SOUTH, 1947).' "

(sighs - shakes head) Song of the South was released by RKO on November 1st, 1946.

[voice_Homer] Stupid AFI... [/voice]

Damn, I can't believe no one at the Disney company corrected them on this (well, actually, now that I think about it, I can). I spotted it immediately, and I'm just some schmuck on the internet. Sad that internet schmucks know more about the history of the Disney films than the AFI and the placeholders at DisneyCO.

And just to continue the Simpsons references:

Worst AFI List Ever.

Miss Celie's Blues (Sister) THE COLOR PURPLE (1985) Once again this movie is ignored by AFI and their damn 100 list - fuck 'em, if I have to become famous for The Color Purple to become important again I will.

It was on tonight? DOH! and I went to the trouble of bothering to pull my cable out of storage and finally hook it up in anticipation of probably watching this. Just shows how out of it I am in regards to TV. :D

Looks like I got several new films to watch/rewatch as I've not seen many of these or (in the case of a lot of the old musicals)I've not seen them in quite a looong while. :D

It's funny that you mention that song. I watched "The Color Purple - The Musical" documentary on the DVD on Sunday and I was reminded of how great that song was. A sad omission, although it never really had a chance to make it to the list.

I'm kinda surprised at the thirties songs/films that ranked so high above 42nd Street. Considering some of the selections, I'm very curious if they're stronger than the Berkely numbers in 42 Street or the fantastic number Pettin' in the Park from Golddiggers of 1933. personally I think it's a shame not to see Tiny Dancer on there, and in my opinion at least two songs (if not more) from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers; start with hysterically funny Sobbin' [Sabin] Women; on to the perfectly droll Lonesome Polecat, and I'd be willing to accept Bless Yore Beautiful Hide somewhere in the lower regions of the list. I agree that Chim Chim Cherree also deserves recognition alongside the spendiferous supercalifragilisticexpealadocious. Glad to see two of my favorites get so many songs, though I think both would be fine with one less on the list to make for more diversity (definitely picked the wrong song for grease, there's better ones from that film).

In all I've seen 43 of the selections, and better than half I can recall the song from the film distinctly. :D

oh and where's Stuck in the Middle with you from Reservoir Dogs?
