    The AFI has announced its next 100 Years list, and it will be 100 Years, 100 Songs: America's Greatest Music In The Movies.

    According to this press release, ballot papers containing 400 songs have been distributed to AFI members for voting.

    Songs that are mentioned include
    * Somewhere Over the Rainbow
    * As Time Goes By
    * Singin’ in the Rain
    * Moon River
    * The Way We Were
    * Puttin’ on the Ritz
    * That’s Entertainment
    * It Had to be You
    * Say a Little Prayer
    * Take My Breath Away
    * Lose Yourself
    * Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah

    Unfortunately, I cannot find the full ballot list at the moment. I was hoping it would be on the AFI site, but alas no.

    undoubtedly it will Eman, because it is impossible to ignore the modern day equivalent of Gone with the Wind, even if internet etiquette of 'coolness' demands people scorn the film.

    My biggest question is do the songs have to be original, or just best as used in a film? my guess is this is NOT academy rules, because otherwise the Al Jolson songs and As Time goes by couldn't be nominated. Perhaps they only have to be sung on screen, but can't be part of the soundtrack? So does that mean we rule out American Graffitti songs but they'd allow Tiny Dancer from Almost Famous? But wait, isn't Take my Breath Away in Top Gun? but nobody sings it? So can we have Rock around the House from American Graffitti on the list? I'll be interested to see the nominees, to say the least!

    So the main concern I have is what will the order be of the following songs bound to make the top ten and possibly top five?
    As Time Goes By
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    White Christmas
    Singin in the Rain

    What other big songs do you all think will be in the top ten, I'm not familiar with Bette Midler for instance.

    I predicted that the AFI would next choose something as lame as this. I bet next year it will be 'memorable moments' or 'memorable quotes.'

    That said, is Falling in Love Again from the Marlene Dietrich movie The Blue Angel, or did it exist prior to that?

    And hopefully Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah makes it to the top 100. That'll give Disney a reason to rush Song of the South onto DVD.

    Does anyone know when the 400 eligible films/songs will be announced?

    Hey, Tequila is on the list. Cool.
    And I have always loved the Chinese language version of Anything Goes from Temple Of Doom.
    Of course, they'll lose to some awful Streisand song. Or Wind Beneath My Wings.

    Some pretty interesting choices...

    Things I'm happy to see on the list -

    I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow especially after its inability to qualify for an Academy Award nomination.

    Pretty cool seeing two songs from Stormy Weather on the nominations list although my favorite song ( Geechy Joe by Cab Calloway ) didn't make the list. Still pretty neat seeing a Fats Waller song on the list.

    Stuff I would have changed -

    I certainly would have placed Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey on the list ahead of For Your Eyes Only by Sheena Easton.

    I would have loved to have seen the opening song ( It Hurts to Face Reality ) from Tender Mercies make the nominee list.

    Kind of disappointed that nothing from The Glenn Miller Story made the list.

    - Walter.

    This is a very interesting list, I'll be watching the countdown. I for one will be very happy just to see Johnny B Goode and Duettino - Sull'Aria (from The Marriage of Figaro) on the final list! [IMG]

    one glaring omission is the lack of Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid, but they got Under the Sea so that's okay.

    Of course if I were picking I've seen so few of these movies I'd probably end up with every disney song on there, because I"ve seen all those! [IMG]

    Some good choices, but the coolest surprise on there was Stuck in the Middle With You from Reservoir Dogs.

    This is the AFI - American films only, hence no Goldfinger or Clockwork Orange. It also means no Hard Day's Night which is a real bummer music wise.

    I was thinking the same thing, George. I knew it wouldn't be there, but I looked anyway. I love "That Thing You Do!", but imitation Beatles isn't quite the same.

    Well, I can't really figure out what qualifies for American for different groups, but if Goldfinger does, then I agree it should be on the list. So should "We'll Meet Again" from Dr. Strangelove if it's American.
