Last week, thanks to a lot of members help, I formatted my HD and went to clean install Win 98. I used a Win 98 2nd edition boot up disk and tried to install Win 98. The computer would not let me install an older version of Win 98. Is this because I used the 2nd Edition boot up disk? If I used the 1st edition would my clean install have worked?

Anyways, I ended up using the refresh disk that came with my computer... the disk is loaded with programs and crap that I don't want. I simply want a clean drive with the OS only.

Im tempted to just go get XP but I heard of compatibility issues with my hardware which HP is not supporting.

Can't boot off of your Win98 CD?

If you have access to another computer, look on the win98 cd for 'fat32ebd' or some such; tools/mtsutils or some such. It'll let you create a boot disk.
