SYNAPSE FILMS, INC. LICENSES “SUSPIRIA”, ONE OF THE MOST ACCLAIMED HORROR FILMS OF ALL TIME, FOR DVD, BLU-RAY AND FUTURE OPTICAL MEDIA.ROMULUS, MI – Synapse Films, Inc. has acquired the North American home-video rights to the 1977 classic horror film SUSPIRIA, directed by Italian horror master Dario Argento. Described as “one of the scariest films of all time” by Entertainment Weekly, SUSPIRIA stars the beautiful Jessica Harper as a young girl caught up in a coven of witches controlling a German dance academy.“I’ve been involved in the restoration and release of many films in my career, but SUSPIRIA has always eluded me, until now,” says Donald May, Jr., President of Synapse Films. “It’s one of my favorite horror films and I’m ecstatic that my business partner, Jerry Chandler, was able to negotiate with the rights holders to release this film. This is going to be an amazing project for us.”Synapse Films, Inc. will work closely with Technicolor Rome and Technicolor Los Angeles to create an all-new high-definition 2K scan from the original negative for a possible 2014-15 video release. “It’s important to spend as much time as possible to create the definitive high-definition home video version for the fans,” May explains. “We’re going to take our time with this one.”Synapse Films, Inc. is currently planning the extensive work on SUSPIRIA in conjunction with Technicolor, utilizing both their Rome and Hollywood facilities. The film scanning will be coordinated and supervised by Technicolor Hollywood’s Director of Restoration Services, Tom Burton, whose film restoration credits include Ridley Scott’s BLADE RUNNER, Georges Méliès’ A TRIP TO THE MOON and BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S.Final specifications, retail pricing, and extras for the Synapse Films release of SUSPIRIA will be announced closer to the as yet to be determined release date.

Superb! Suspiria is a film that desperately needs a new transfer, the current one doing the rounds is utterly hideous. Synapse had hinted they were preparing a disc of Argento's OPERA, so I had assumed that was their big aquisition. It's nice to find out I'm wrong.

I wonder If they could get Fox to give up the American version to be included. I watched this a few years back and it's certainly interesting see all the alternate cuts that were done.

2 thoughts:1. "Future optical media?"2. Reading about all the work they have to do between Rome and Hollywood, I'm glad that a "smaller" title like Suspiria could still sell enough on blu to justify the cost. Maybe this isn't the twilight time for the format after all...

They could easily cut together a submaster matching the American version on their own, the only bit of "new" footage they'd need to scan would be the alternate American "breathing" main title. Actually, an HD master of the American version already exists. It's aired a few times in HD over the past couple years, and an SD downconversion of it was available for streaming on Netflix fo a brief time.

Great news. I have the UK BD, but I'm sure this will be 100x better.

As a side note, Calum Waddell tweeted that his production company is working on supplements for Argento's TENEBRE, also coming on BD from Synapse. I've always thought of this as Argento's best film, so I'm looking forward to this even more than SUSPIRIA. The current Arrow BD of TENEBRE is absolutely hideous. My old non-anamorphic Anchor Bay DVD looks better!

This is great news.

I'm just going to be a little bit of a Victor Meldrew for a moment - why so long?

2014-2015 ? If this is a film they've been dying to get their hands on for years, will it really take them over a year to put out?

I certainly agree that these things shouldn't be rushed, but a possible wait until 2015 seems a tad excessive.

Don said they are going to start on this after the Holidays and since Synapse is a two man operation, I don't think that an estimated release of late 2014 or early 2015 is unexpected or excessive. (Don't forget that they have other titles they are working on)

It should have a 4K scan and original 4-track Magnetic sound track not a 5.1remix.
I agree on the 4-track, but 4K scanning is expensive and Synapse is a small company. You do what you can within the confines of your budget. Many Criterion releases have been 2K scans and look gorgeous. In a perfect world, all 35mm productions would be 4K scans and large format either 6K or 8K.

I'm also hoping for the original 4 track sound and it would be great if one of you would send it to me from the USA because i understand it's hard to find a supplier of Synapse released blu rays who will ship outside the country.

"We’re going to take our time with this one.”I really like the sound of that. I've at least two Suspiria DVD's already so guys: No hurry. Just make a great transfer, several audio options and good extras.

They will almost certainly carry it, and they mark down to avoid customs as well! I've been very happy with all my orders from them.

You can preorder the Synapse Demons Steelbooks from them right now; they've only marked them up $1 more than they cost on the Synapse site.

Most Synapse titles are carried by Amazon and other on-line retailers who ship overseas, as well. There are only a few titles that are limited to direct-sale from Synapse themselves.

Re: the original 4-channel mix, obviously Synapse will include that track, provided they can find/are given access to the elements for it.
