I have a Panasonic widescreen projection TV that I purchased from Costco a few months back.

What is technically happening when I view a tv show in widescreen mode that was not intended to be viewed in wide screen format?

    Is it dropping the resolution?

    CRT projection?

If so, bars on the sides, aren't really waste'n all to much in that case, as the video is laid down in horizontal scans.... But then again, you are still wasting pixels that would be lit on widescreen material.

The resolution lost is worse, when the black bars are on the top and bottom though. As in 2.35:1 movies on your set, even if they are anamorphic.

    This assumes, CRT RPTV.

It depends on your TV. The picture is either stretched or "zoomed in".
