Last night I watched Tender Is The Night again, the second time within a week. I'm re-reading the novel which I read two or three times when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I know this will annoy the literary purists, but I find Ivan Moffat's screenplay much more focused and precise than the novel. I'll say no more.

Today I'm going to watch This Could Be The Night.

And then you could watch History Is Made at Night or Remember the Night or The Night Is Young...

The Big Combo (1955) - I have not upgraded very many of my Film Noir favorites to Blu-Ray, but I read a lot of good things about this transfer so I took the plunge and am glad I did. I love this movie and now I think it looks about as good as it can. Richard Conte is a great bad guy and the whole thing just works about as well as this type of film can. The last scene with all the gunfire taking place in the fog is a favorite of mine.

Dr. No - (1962) - The first Bond film is still one of my very favorites. Connery owns the role from the first scene in the casino and everything that would become cliche is still fresh and fun. He doesn't have all the cool toys and the car yet but I'm not sure I miss them too much. The Blu-Ray format has been good to the Bond series in my opinion, and I have upgraded all my favorites.

One last post before traveling to Houston:
Alien (4K HDR10 disc) Awesome!
Terror Is a Man (TCM) Dreadful, cheap knock-off of Dr. Moreau. Made in 1959 in the Philippines. Starring the hapless Francis Lederer.
Signing off till next week.

I agree the Alien UHD transfer is amazing! I watched mine on a Sony XBR55A9F 4K OLED and if this title doesn't make others want to go out and buy a 4K blu-ray player what will? There are a number of great transfers in 4K and this older title shows that older movies can be done and done very well in 4K UHD! I am dying to get Aliens on 4K UHD Blu-ray along with The Abyss and True Lies!

Way to go Fox! Good job!

I did get around to watching Damn Yankees on DVD tonight. Looked OK for a DVD, pretty clean and reasonably sharp, but a high definition transfer would do absolute wonders for this movie. The sound seemed a little flat, too. A refreshening of it would improve things as well.

My biggest complaint about the film is the number of songs from the original score that got dropped, It left Tab Hunter with very little to sing, and that new song "There's Something About an Empty Chair" is pretty lame.

Great cast - nice FX - Meh movie. Shows what happens when you try to push 20 hours of story into a 2 hour time slot. OK watch but not in the re-watch pile.
