I'm enjoying an unintended Lana Turner & Robert Taylor MGM season. I've recently watched Homecoming, Honky Tonk and Weekend At The Waldorf and last night I watched Johnny Eager. Today I'm going to watch Ambush.

Watched one I bet you haven't heard of (at least in a long time). Not as bad as the reviews. Modern B movie, but best for us old timers, that know who the Phantom is.

I saw The Phantom and The Shadow around the same time, and I liked one more than the other, but I can't for the life of me remember which one I liked more. I have them both on laserdisc but never updated beyond those. If I had to guess, I'd say I liked The Phantom more.

For me it was the Shadow but that was because of the Character and not the film. (As I reported in my Shadow summary, in Mystery & Crime Series) it is the best Shadow movie available imho. I found both to be fun if I didn't try to analyze them. But I'll not be going for a re-watch soon.

For the curious - the Phantom Serial 1943 is PD and available on archive.org to watch or download.

I really enjoy Johnny Eager for Heflin's amazing performance. He really deserved the award he won. I first saw the film as a teen in a 35mm revival print shown in 1.85.:):(

    Monday night, in order:
The Fortune (TT BD) Hadn't seen this since its opening.
Psycho (Turbine BD Region free) This is from the fabulous German limited release box. Still potent. I saw this when it opened all on my childish own.
Vampyres (Arrow BD) From the Blood Hunger box of films by Larraz. Stylish vampire/sex film. Great to see Bessie Love (!) in it.
Miracle in Milan (Arrow Academy BD Region B) De Sica's neo-realist fantasy about the poor being viewed as a nuisance by the "others" and having to fly off the earth.
    Tuesday:
Missing Link (3D DCP) Enjoyed it along with my wife and 4 others. Pity.
    Fosse/Verdon (FX HD) Episode 2
The Coming of Sin (Arrow BD) From the Blood Hunger box of films by Larraz. Very sexy film.
Il tetto (The Roof) (Arrow Academy DVD Zone 2) De Sica's last neo-realist film.
Keoma (Arrow BD) Franco Nero in an amazing late spaghetti Western.

That horrific tragedy in Paris. I thought about watching it myself for that reason.

Inspired by the tragic loss in Paris:
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Warner BD) What a dark film! I saw a 35mm print in another lifetime but I didn't remember how noirish it is. The final line and shot are so heartbreaking! I know Hugo's ending is darker but Laughton's line is hard to beat. The politics of the film reflect our own today. Uncanny.
La Fin du jour (The End of Day) Julien Duvivier's 1939 French film about aged thespians living in a retirement home. Funny, human, tragic, heartbreaking. A true classic that should be better known.

I watched the new French Blu-ray disc of Tender Is The Night yesterday. Many of us have been waiting a long time for this and a disc of this quality is worth waiting for. The transfer is excellent with a wide range of colors, but - and note this well you teal obsessives - blue seems a bit subdued. I don't know this film well enough to say if this is correct and I'd love an opinion from someone who does know.

The film itself is far better than I had previously recognized. All the cast do well; there's not a weak performance anywhere so obviously Henry King was on form. Leon Shamroy is at his best; Bernard Herrmann underpins the drama and the emotions superbly, the screenplay does a brilliant job.

My one criticism is the rendition of the song over the titles. It's a very good song by Sammy Fain but that arrangement and that chorus! If you want to hear the song properly, listen to either Vic Damone or Tony Bennett.

The fifth season of Bosch dropped today on Prime, so I had to watch the first episode (of 10). Glad to have it back, but I'm still in the midst of the most recent season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and there are several other things at Netflix that I want to get to, but there is just TOO much out there to watch!

The only time I saw Tender Is the Night in a 35mm 'Scope print was at MoMA, and it was severely faded. This was during the Henry King retrospective and Fox sent a vault print. I did like the movie in spite of the faded condition.

The French disc is Zone-free so you can buy it with confidence. It's one of those hybrid packages with a DVD bundled in as an extra.
