Before there was Indiana Jones, there was Allan Quartermain, the stalwart hero of H. Rider Haggard's classic 1885 novel that has been filmed four times. Stewart Granger plays Quartermain in this 1950 M-G-M adaptation that was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar®, and won the awards for Best Color CInematography and Best Editing. Deborah Kerr plays the plain Englishwoman who hires Quartermain to lead the hunt for her missing husband, even though no safari has ever returned from uninhabited regions their expeditions must cross. Part adventure, part spectacle and filmed amid the awesome splendor and peril of untamed Africa, King Solomon's Mines is a film to treasure.

I'm not a big Stewart Granger fan but oddly enough i like all the action adventure films he made in the late 40s /50s. This is my favorite of those films.

I tend to prefer the 1937 version with Cedric Hardwicke and Paul Robeson, but I like this one a lot, too.

And interestingly, the film eschews a traditional film score for tribal source music. However, the original trailer features an original composition by the great Miklós Rózsa, two-thirds of which are preserved on Film Score Monthly’s release of his scores for Valley of the Kings and Men of the Fighting Lady

It's an original poster art, but I guess they could have chosen another which better detailed their faces.

I knew it was the original poster art. I was just being flippant. But my point remains. They look nothing at all like Kerr and Granger.

Great movie! This is terrific news. It always looked muddy on home video to me; I am sure since this is WAC it will be a revelation like Long Long Trailer.

I avoided this film for years because I thought it was too epic to be seen in such inferior quality once I grew up. Day 1 purchase. I'm not crazy about stewart granger but this and last hunt are two favorites of mine. Warners did a fabulous job with the later. Can't wait to get this.

Haven't seen this since the MGM archival print during the MGM retro at MoMA in 1974. The print, then, was a gorgeous Tech IB. Looking forward to this release.

I'm looking forward to this one. Its never looked good on Home Video before and I owned the VHS, Laserdisc and DVD. Stewart Granger is a favorite of mine hopefully some of his other good MGM films will be on the way soon: Scaramouche, The Prisoner of Zenda, Green Fire and Gun Fury

I'm embarrassed to say that the only version of King Solomon's Mines I've seen is the one from the '80s with Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone.
