i picked up dark city the other day, i had seen it a while ago, and it didnt impress me then. but after months and months of remembering stuff, sets, ideas, the music etc... i realised what a cool film it really was. im sure there are other movies out there, that you were scared to rent/see, but when you did, they were great. anotherone comes to mind, steve sommers- deep rising, such a cool film. but bombed, and critics bagged it.
surly you guys cam come up with others.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (certainly "appreciated" by the gay crowd, but underrated in terms of its merit simply as a really good film)
The Pajama Game (wonderful fluff with Doris Day)

Monsieur Verdoux

One movie I can think of that did not receive the just rewards it should have gotten was The Colour Purple. It was a showpiecce of great acting and story from its various characters.

Me and my friend are the only people I know who have seen Casino. And we both LOVE that movie very much so. Seems to not get the props it deserves.
Or at least to me.

I agree with Rain about John Sayles. All of his movies are fantastic. My favorites of his are:
  • Limbo
  • Men With Guns
  • City of Hope
Dark City is very underrated. It has a concept similar to that of The Matrix but Dark City was released first and definitely is the better film. It wasn't as dumbed-down as The Matrix was.
Another film I really enjoyed was eXistenZ. Another film that questions reality. Not too many people have seen it.

As for the bad rap about the characters--hey, I've seen space operas that put their emphasis on human personalities and relationships. They're called "Star Trek" movies. Give me transparent underwater cities and vast hollow senatorial spheres any day. --Roger Ebert on The Phantom Menace

I certainly agree about John Sayles. I'm also a David Cronenberg fan.
One movie that never found an audience is the highly underrated " Babe, Pig in the City".

- I've never been moved so much in my life. It's the only movie I know where it immediately jumped into my Top Ten Favorite Films of all time. The beautiful cinematography by Freddie Francis, the inspiring story, the great acting performances by Ferris Bueller, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, and Andre Braugher, and ESPECIALLY the moving score by James Horner all under the direction of Edward Zwick makes this one of the most underappreciated and underrated movies in the war history genre. And to top it off, it was fun to watch.

I must second Glory. It also had one of the funniest lines in movie history. And it's a beautiful, heart-wrenching movie to boot.
Rawlins: Where about you from?
Trip: I'm from around Tennessee. I ran away when I was 12 years old and I ain't never looked back.
Jupiter: W-W-W-What ya doin' since then?
Trip: I run for President. I didn't win though.
Also, Pleasantville is one of the best movies I have ever seen, but gets little respect.
Take care,
Chuck

The Road To ElDorado was a very nice animated movie that I felt was not appreciated. Other I would put on this list include Hook and The Perfect Storm.
