Lets look at Nevada Smith. By the mid-1960’s, veteran director Henry Hathaway had already established himself as a reliable – and underrated – director of westerns, notably with John Wayne. Steve McQueen was riding a wave of success from films like The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Great Escape (1963) and The Cincinnati Kid (1965), en route to icon status with the movie Bullitt (1968). Their paths crossed for their only film together, a prequel to the smash movie The Carpetbaggers (1964) focusing on the early years of one of the characters, Nevada Smith. Previously released on DVD by Paramount, Kino has licensed the movie for its Blu-ray debut.

I was about to post the same thing. Landau’s career had been on the rise ever since North By NorthwesT. He had great career resurgence later in the Lugosi role and prior to that was nominated for Crimes and Misdemeanor for an Oscar.

Brian Keith had already had a storied career as well.

The casting of Steve McQueen seems both flawed and perfect for Nevada Smith. He was 35 when the movie was made, but was supposedly playing someone 18 or so who was half Native American. But if you can get past that unreality, this is a well-made epic revenge Western from 1966 with a great cast. The commentary is terrific, like sitting around watching the movie with three friends who are also experts on it. PQ is excellent on this Kino Lorber blu-ray.
