A lot of the titles mentioned aren't really underrated as much as underSEEN -many have received critical acclaim. A few that have taken critical blasting which I feel deserved better are what I suppose you would call guilty pleasures:
IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE (fairly creepy for a cheap 50's sci-fi film).
FIEND WITHOUT A FACE (for its effects alone).
BLUE LAGOON (1980 - admittedly terrible script and acting, but made up for by glorious photography, music, and a really touching sequence during which Christopher Atkins finds Paddy's skeleton and traces the bones inside his own skin, a first brush with mortality).
SOLDIER BLUE (Reviled for its gory climax, mauled for its silly dialog between Candice Bergen and Peter Strauss, yet the film has undeniable power and was one of the first, along with A MAN CALLED HORSE and LITTLE BIG MAN, to try to correct the errors regarding views of Native Americans as savage murderers).
PENNIES FROM HEAVEN (Simply some of the finest choreography since the forties, with superb hoofing by Steve Martin and - yes - Christopher Walken).
The list could go on and on.
Would enjoy a thread about OVER-Rated movies, too.

The Frighteners - I have no idea why Universal was not able to make a success out of this movie.

I definitely agree with Cronenberg's eXistenZ, that film had an atmosphere that I absolutely could not pull away from. And as far as I know not very many people had even heard of it outside of the art house market (Here in the States anyway).

The Frighteners and Fiend Without A Face are hugely underrated! How about Iceman, A Midnight Clear, Cop with James Woods, Dolores Calibourne, White Dog, The Northerners, Indochine, Evil Dead II, A Man Escaped, The Hill, The Rocketeer, 'Ladybird, Ladybird', Foul Play (I would have to choose this for raising the image of librarians!), The Asphyx, Predator 2, Hamburger Hill and 84 Charlie MoPic, Theatre Of Blood, Blue Sky, Kafka, Devil In A Blue Dress, Mute Witness and Johnny Guitar?

Just curious as to what you meant by this statement. I listed The Big Blue on my list of underrated movies as well. By stating it is a "dead horse issue" here, do you mean that it has been discussed a lot here previously?
