Just saw Minority Report. It's also very likely to still be in my top 10 at year's end.

Nearing the year's end and I have only seen Panic Room from my list. I'd give that a :star::star::star:1/2 (out of five)

I have only seen 2. The Lady and the Duke was a bit of a disappointment. I liked it, but I have very high expectations when it comes to Eric Rohmer and they weren't met. Sunshine State I throughly enjoyed and it will likely end up on my year end list, it sits at #2 or 3 for now.
It looks like Dogville will not be coming out this year.
My #1 so far was left off my list: Miyazaki's Spirited Away

Several of my predicted Top Ten aren't out yet, but I'm pretty sure that Minority Report and Spider-Man will make my year-end Top Ten. (and LOTR I bet) :D

-All or Nothing / Mike Leigh, Not much is known yet about this ensemble drama, except that it is set in modern, 21st century London.
It doesn't come close to his best films. Not even close to being in the top 10 of the year for me.

Just saw Punchdrunk Love and it knocked my socks off. (well, not literally). Very likely to be on my year end list. I did finally get to see the trailer for Adaptation and it looked amazing, just as I'd hoped.

While searching for the FAQ, I came across this thread. I noticed that the last post was in November, long before all the big "Christmas" movies came out. Now that it's March, and most or all of the movies have come out and (hopefully) been seen, what do you folks think now?

My precognition wasn't too good as most of my list turned out to be disappointments to one degree or another. Only Sunshine State really delivered.

Dogville didn't come out and will likely premiere at Cannes this year. Lady and the Duke, The Two Towers, Minority Report, Gangs of New York did not quite meet my expectations.

I still haven't gotten around to seeing Adaptation and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was gone from Atlanta in 3 weeks so I didn't get a chance to see it either.

Hoo boy. Who dredged up this ridiculous thread?
htf_images_smilies_biggrin.gif

Let's see how I did.

My original post (2/21/02):

1. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
2. Spider-Man
3. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
4. The Panic Room
5. Catch Me If you Can
6. Gangs of New York
7. Minority Report
8. Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
9. Death to Smoochy
10. Signs

Movies I wanted to include but I couldn't make them add up to 10:

The Road to Perdition
Chicago
Insomnia
Showtime
Hollywood Ending
Windtalkers

OK, before I even look back over my 'locked in final' Top 10 of 2002, I gotta wonder what the flying farts I was thinking? Hollywood Ending?? And what's THE Panic Room? God I'm such a dork. Anyway, lemme go open up another browser and find the Top 10 thread...

nothin but workworkwork

My Top Ten as of this very second:

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
2. Minority Report
3. Frailty
4. Bowling for Columbine
5. Chicago
6. Adaptation
7. 25th Hour
8. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
9. The Good Girl
10. Spirited Away

--> So what have I learned? Well I liked The Two Towers. Genius I am.

The only other predictions I got right were Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (which I love even more after a second visit) and Minority Report.

Spider-Man would have made my Top 15 (if there were such a thing), Panic Room I still really dig, Catch Me If You Can also would have made that imaginary Top 15, Gangs of New York I didn't much care for (visual palette / DD Lewis aside), Star Wars I'm proud to admit I really liked - though it's hardly Top 10 material, Death to Smoochy is a movie I truly enjoy but it's kind of a big mess, and Signs...hmph...dunno. I saw it twice and absolutely dug it both times, but it doesn't make the list. Oh well.

(Should we try this again for 2003?)

HAHAHA!!!

What a great thread. Look at all the excitement for Simone. Where were all of you when it was released, I think they could have used your ticket sales.

P.S - probably would have been on my predicted top ten if I had made one :b

EDIT: Yes we should try for 2003 - I guess its not TOO late.

What's great fun (and exhilarating) about this is knowing that there are ALWAYS going to be these wonderful little films that come out of nowhere (for most of us) or that just don't seem like they'll be as special as they turn out to be. On Scott's list we have:
Frailty
Bowling for Columbine
Adaptation
25th Hour
The Good Girl
Spirited Away
None of which were on his original list. I too loved every one of them.
I look forward to more of these great discoveries in the year to come.

I didn't say it at the time, but I was (and am) very impressed with Brian Lawrence's list. That list alone put those films on my radar. Unfortunately, I only ended up seeing:

-Sunshine State /John Sayles

-Heaven / Tom Tykwer

-Panic Room / David

-Adaptation / Spike Jonze

But I still want to see:

-Spider / David Cronenberg

-Ararat / Atom Egoyan

-Invincible / Werner Herzog

-All or Nothing / Mike

-Coastlines / Victor Nunez

-Happy Times / Zhang Yimou

It isn't just Brian's list. Everybody's lists added to (or reinforced) my radar, and I appreciate it.
