Inspired by the fact that not ONE really good movie has been released this year (I'd guess that We Were Soldiers might be the first real candidate), I thought it would be entertaining to predict our Top Ten Movies for the upcoming year. Feel free to include foreign, artsy or 'obscure' titles if you like, or even movies that have already been released. (Though I can't imagine which ones you'd pick! [IMG] )
Full listings of the 2002 releases can be seen here ( [IMG] ) or at various websites like www.upcomingmovies.com . I think it will be interesting to gauge how a future movie is perceived in relation to how it's actually appreciated. Logically, your lists will be filled mainly with the 'bigger' flicks, as those are the ones we've already heard so much about.
Obviously there are movies to be released this year that we may not have heard of yet, but I don't think there will be that many. This is a project for those firmly obsessed with upcoming movies!
Once you make your picks, I ask you to keep them locked in, although you should certainly come back to update your lists with comments after seeing your most eagerly anticipated choices. Now I'm off to do mine, and it might take a few minutes, but to you it will seem like an instant.
    ...
    See? Here they are!
    1. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
    2. Spider-Man
    3. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
    4. The Panic Room
    5. Catch Me If you Can
    6. Gangs of New York
    7. Minority Report
    8. Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones
    9. Death to Smoochy
    10. Signs
Movies I wanted to include but I couldn't make them add up to 10:
    The Road to Perdition
    Chicago
    Insomnia
    Showtime
    Hollywood Ending
    Windtalkers
    Get busy!

Isn't Black Hawk Down considered a 2001 film?

-Sunshine State /John Sayles, Premise: This drama tells the story of a Florida island besieged by country club resort developers (a theme Sayles touched upon in Limbo, though that was set in Alaska). Included in the story are a woman returning home after a long absence, and another woman who is forced to sell the restaurant and motel she inherited.
-Heaven / Tom Tykwer, This is the first of a planned trilogy that the late Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski had planned as his next series of projects. Miramax has plans to make all three films, with Hell coming next, and ending with Purgatory. It's unknown if Tom Tykwer will be directing all three. Like the parts of Decalogue and Three Colors, this film is not literally about Heaven (as a place), but the emotional concept behind it.
-Spider / David Cronenberg, This is a psychological thriller (not surprisingly) about a man, trying to piece his life back together, living in London's East End after his (premature) release from a mental institution. Writing in a journal, the man tries to discover the truth about his mysterious past and the death of his mother, even as he still struggles with his fragile sanity. Spider was her nickname for him...
-Ararat / Atom Egoyan, This film-within-a-film follows the production of a historical epic about the holocaust (1915-1923) of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, focusing on how it changes the life of a young man (Alpay) working as a driver on the set...
-Panic Room / David Fincher, This story centers around a divorced woman in her 30's and her daughter, who are caught up in a cat-and-mouse game inside their new New York brownstone when three burglars come looking for a hidden cache of cash. Mother and daughter hide in the "panic room," a secret room designed for just such a purpose, but still end up fighting for their lives...
-Invincible / Werner Herzog , Acclaimed director Werner Herzog is known for stories that reflect the diversity and intricacies of our history and the human condition, and this tale of a Jewish man who could lay claim to the title of "World Strongest Man" amidst the early days of Nazism, seems right down his alley...
-Adaptation / Spike Jonze, Set in South Florida (and probably the first movie to deal with a phenomenon known as orchidodelirium), this is the true story of a plant dealer and three Seminole Indians who conspired to clone rare orchids and sell them at exorbitant rates to plant collectors. However... that's just what The Orchid Thief is about. There's another half to this movie, and that's where the title Adaptation comes in. This movie is the tale of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's attempt to adapt The Orchid Thief to the big screen.....
-All or Nothing / Mike Leigh, Not much is known yet about this ensemble drama, except that it is set in modern, 21st century London.
-Coastlines / Victor Nunez, This is the story of a guy who takes the fall for a couple of creeps for a crime in Louisiana. When he gets out of jail three years later, and tries to collect his money, they won't pay up. Returning to his northern Florida hometown, he soon becomes involved in an affair with the wife of the sheriff...
-Happy Times / Zhang Yimou, Happy Times is a small but broad Chinese language comedy about human nature when it comes to love and the pursuit of happiness. Middle-aged Ding Shikou visits a matchmaker to find a wife. Finally, she sends him the perfect one. Desperate to impress her, Ding promises her a far more extravagant wedding than he can afford, leading her to believe he is rich. Then desperate, to make money, Ding refurbishes an abandoned railway car on Lover's Lane and charges admission for young couples wandering by. Up in the woods, he discovers a young blind girl who's just attempted suicide. He saves her life this time only to witness her attempt again. She tells him she wouldn't be so desperate if she had a job...

And if it ever gets released House of 1,000 Corpses

Nothing that comes out this year can beat the marvel and majesty known as Crossroads. [IMG]
In all seriousness, I hate to do this kind of thing, because I believe it will firmly jinx the movies. I am most looking forward to:
    The Two Towers
    Attack of the Clones
    Panic Room
Spiderman (Dear Sam, please don't pull a Burton here)
    Gangs of New York
I know I have nothing new to add here. Sorry.

Of the list I posted, I've already seen three (AOTC, Spider-Man and Panic Room) and I'll see another tomorrow (Minority Report). Panic Room was a dissapointment to me, so it isn't even on my current top 10. But AOTC and Spider-Man do top my current top 10 and they are very likely to still be on the list by the end of the year.

I have absolutely no way of knowing, and I'm certainly not familiar with all the movies in the pipeline, but that said...

    "Dogville"

    "Minority Report"

    "Y Tu Mama Tambien"

(But hearing about that Tykwer movie and the Leigh one have got me real interested!)
