Is there an orthodox view as to screen size/distance for optimal viewing?

How about any personal preferences in liew of an orthodoxy regarding screen size/roomsize viewing distance?

If I sit eight to ten feet from my screen is 50 inches too big?
How far back should you be to watch a screen that size?

Any thoughts opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Actually, according to the THX standard, 50" diagonal is too small for an 8' viewing distance. They would recommend 5.6 foot viewing distance.

Of course the THX standard is intended more for front projection, but their distances do give you an immersive theatrical experience.

I sit 11 feet back from an 84" diagonal picture, and it is too damn small. I just can't fit a bigger screen in the available space.

IMO, it also depends heavily on the quality of the display. Entry-level projectors will show horrible screen door if you sit at a recommended distance, while higher-quality units with more resolution, or CRT projectors will look much much better at such a distance or even closer.
