Pre-outs: The 1802 included 3 sets of pre-outs for the left front, center and right front channels. However, this feature has been removed from the 1803.
Now that is something that would deter me from 'upgrading' to the 1803, from the 1802. Adjustable X-overs (80 and above), second zone capability, better remote, better layout etc is all good and everything but it doesn't do anything to improve my listening experience and the only thing that could have, by adding separate 3 channel amp, Denon took away from the 1803.
 for that one, Denon.

I have observed that many a times a newer model will sound a tad weaker or thinner than the model it's replacing. I thought the 3801 was better in music than the 3802 and that the 4800 was much better than the 4802 for music and HT both.
Many a times manufacturers "add" a sixth channel of power without making major changes to power supply, etc. and I believe this must result in thinner or weaker sound. The 4800 weighs more than the 4802 even though the 4800 has 5 channels of amplification. I believe this may have something to do with it although I can't say that for sure. I can only present my opinions which are based upon listening to these receivers and owning them.(3801,3802 and 4802)

I felt the same. Cleaner more resolved musical presentation on the 3801 compared to the 3802. The 3802 sounded a little smeared in the mid range and low end, that gave most people the impression of warmth when it was only muddying things up.

Yogi,
After confering with my co-workers they ,unlike myself seemed to remember the 3801 also sounding better than the 3802, but the truth be told, it was long enough ago that no one was sure.....a guy suggested we start writing these observations down 'cause maybe we'd be able to spot trends...
