the real question is what the HELL were you doing playing golf with such a new set of sweeeet subs!!, I thought that you had to own them for 60 days before you could do anything else with your "spare time".-TIC

My wife really liked the looks of the SVS. I, too, thought they looked much better than I had expected (this is due mainly to the nice "sock," which I don't think is conveyed well through the pictures). I thought it would look good, but when I got it, it looked really, really good (or is it well?...I digress). I've already set the table a bit and told her about Obey's tower of power and how cool and symetrical it looked. Ground work, baby. Ground work.

I had to play, I had not played in 5 weeks, about 10 times for me in that time period, thats were I got the money. It was not like my wife said, go ahead and take the money, she was like you want it, you finance them. It was a brutal five weaks for this avid golfer but well worth the wait.

I actually had to walk my wife through the Yamaha's remote at the golf course cause after the amp shut down I reconfigured my bass using the my mains, she actually got setup correct and the subs playing, she never stop amaizing me(sometimes good, sometimes bad)

I love the looks of the subs, when I see them it like seeing two towers of power over there in the corner.

I have nicknamed them Thors Twillangers, for you movie buffs that should be an obvious one.

Speaking of groundwork, has anyone found problems with the second degree of WAF? Mine seems willing to accept the idea of dual cylinders in the corner of the living room, but I'm worried that after getting them I'll have to convince her that her curios and bric-a-brac will have to go. After all, what point is there in a clean, accurate subwoofer if the room is filled with little rattles?

I am not too fond of the look myself (maybe from tube traps - always thought that the demo rooms with 87 traps placed all over looked ridiculous), but it is not a deal breaker for me. If it does the job, then it looks fine!

But my wife's reaction was a deal breaker - no way even one of them is making it's way into the living room - and I would want at least 2 eventually.

So I sent my 16-46 back, and bought one that could be hidden better.

Cheers,

Chris

MarcVH-

You and I will shake Seattle with our SVS's, eh?

There's this stuff that's sold in Fred Meyer or Lowe's called Quakehold Gel. It was popular after our quake last February. It's a tacky gel that you can apply to all of those little nick nacks to keep them from rattling. It's clear, non-staining, and leaves no residue when removed. Good stuff. You can actually roll it into a ball and place it between a window and the frame to prevent rattles there too. I'd recommend grabbing some of that or a similar product.

Andy, thanks for the tip; I may give that a try. Unfortunately, even with the spousal approval, I still need to wait for my bonus check to come through (I hope) and to check other power usage to see whether I can turn this thing on without blowing fuses. The Samson amp doesn't mention power usage information, but I'd suppose that powering two CS+'s could draw 8 amps or so.

Back when I was married I managed audio/video retail stores, yet did not have a home theater, and had a very modest two channel system at that. The reason I didn't have the setup I have now is I didn't want to deal with my wife's love of country music. It was worth not having the good sound at home for myself so as not to have to listen to her stuff at high volume. I don't believe I'd have had the WAF problem if I'd bought the stuff then.
But now that I'm divorced, I've expanded the house to build a dedicated theater room, and improved my setup in various ways. I don't have an SVS yet (still waiting on check and deciding on model) but I do have two very wife-unfriendly mains in my Klipsch La Scalas. The suckers are huge and really take up some space when you get them back off the walls. I've always said "No woman would put up with this room". On the other hand, they don't have to. Just like Donny, any woman who wants to be part of my life has to know that I'm not giving up my setup for micro-satellites or Bose cubes (I've sold many to husbands kicking their feet on the carpet while their wives looked on approvingly). I've already said "just realize these speakers will be here whether you are here or not". We have to set our priorities straight, you know :).
High time more men grew a pair when it comes to dealing with wives and especially girlfriends. I've always said that when a woman tries to decide on your sound system (assuming she knows nothing about it but the decorative aspects; I'm not cutting down women who actually know something about our hobby) you should decide a few things for yourself. Like how half the closet really is yours and she can just make do with her half. Like you deciding you're going to be the one to decorate the bathroom, and meanwhile you want your half of the medicine cabinet and shower rod back. Maybe some framed "Guns and Ammo" magazine covers for the kitchen. Step on her toes a few times and maybe she'll see that she shouldn't get to decide every single thing that goes in the house that belongs to both of you.
I understand that there is a fairness issue; if you don't have enough money to get both of you what you want then some sacrifices need to be made so both of you can enjoy what your income can provide. I'm just talking about when women make purchase decisions for you when money isn't the object.
Oh, fyi: My La Scala speakers were bought for a steal from a guy whose wife wouldn't let him keep them. The poor schmuck had them in an 8x10 room against the wall side by side; the only place and way the little woman would let him have them. I bought them for less than half the normal used cost, and his sad face and her happy one were the last I saw of them as I drove away. Don't let this happen to you. What are you guys afraid of? That she wont sleep with you tonight? I've seen guys put themselves in such a terrible state of not having a say in things just so they have something warm at night.

Methinks I know why Norman is divorced. ;) :D j/k Norman, I don't want to make light of what could be very serious to you. Actually I think you make a good point. When (if) I get married, I plan to choose my battles carefully. I'll tell her I want two rooms my way, the computer room and the theater. If I can put those in the basement so there out of sight, that's fine, so long as the rooms perform their proper function. For the rest of the house I want limited veto power. As long as its not obnoxious (like bright pink walls or something) and it meets my minimal functional requirements, then she can do what she wants.
I think that's fair and reasonable. Personnally I wouldn't want a woman that's going to be a pain about that. Of course there's always a way to get what you want. Threaten to take up motorcycling, flying, or skydiving. I've always wanted to do all three of those. I plan to make it known, then she may feel the need to encourage me to pursue my less dangerous hobbies.

Heh...my divorce had a lot more to do with the best friend she was schtupping than any purchase decisions. Make light all you want; I take few things very seriously anymore, though good sound is one of them. It's just that this diatribe has been brewing inside me for quite awhile, and I'd been considering writing something on the topic for that time.
My attitudes may well preclude my getting married again though :). Which is fine with me, since I have a sense of freedom that I enjoy since becoming single again. Then I see how many guys are literally under the thumb of their SO, as if they don't have half the power in the relationship. IMHO, all a man has to do to reassert that power is to stop caring if she sleeps with you that one night. You'd think guys couldn't go a day without. Sex as a bargaining chip is a prevalent way that women assert their power in a relationship, which few will admit but remains truth. Don't play that game. Do your best to educate that great sound is a bigger enhancement of your lifestyle than one more wall hanging or plant.
I'm not saying there isn't room for compromise, but if you're single and already have your setup then set a standard that she'll have to take this aspect of yourself as well as the more decor-friendly aspects. Just trying to see fewer guys in the stores letting their wives choose their speakers based on fitting into decor rather than quality of sound.

Some people get all the fun, I was happy for the longest time with my Altec lansing computer sub. (It's the ACS56 70watt total 5 speaker set)

My (room) theater PC is a

19 inch CRT

Pioneer 106S slot load dvd rom

sound blaster pci (analog sound card)

Complete 2 channel analog Stereo Sound!

At least I can go to the Edwards 22 Stadium theater to watch movies with THX quality on a fairly expensive projector.

Just remember guys, it's your house and your money, too. You're allowed to do things she doesn't like, from time to time! Just as she's allowed to buy that 100th pair of shoes...

When I had one(wife) it was almost 3 days after it(SVs) arrived until she noticed. She despised anything electronic so she could care less, but I never will forget a certain gunshot in the film "Seven" that made her jump off the couch.

Anyway,I still have the sub...just not the wife

Norman, :emoji_thumbsup: great speech. That's how I feel about the "WAF/SAF/GAF injustice. It's the same with the toilet seat scene. They want us to put up and down just for them. I say put it down yourself if you don't want to sit on the porcelain. It frustrates me to no end when I continually read these posts from guys who aren't allowed to get the gear they want but I bet the little woman gets to do all the decorating herself and heaven help the man if he should happen to have an opinion.

Greg,

I am(was) planning on getting a 25-31 and power it with an old sony 100 WPC @ 8 ohms that I already have. I have read many threads on people who have bought the CS model and powered them with old (cheap) amps and were "satisfied" but they normally state they are going to upgrade soon with more watts. I don't normally listen to movies at reference, but I do want to feel the base when it's there. I also read where someone elses Sony shut off, but I how loud were you listening? I just wonder if I will be satisified. I really do like the idea of not wasting my stuff if I don't have to.

I'm an bachelor type - Not through lack of trying, but it's just that life hasn't worked out...

I've decided that if they can't deal with guns, movies, music, camping, cars and me spending weird hours at my job, they won't be able to deal with IMPORTANT things...

Wife acceptance of your SVS!
Except for the bugged-eyed - its huge - look, ... she had no problems with accepting my SVS 25-31PCi last APR '02!!! :) She did ask if I thought if it was big enough???(yes, sarcasm runs strong in our family!! ;) )
Well, she did require me to clean up & vacuum the corner where my AudioSource SW15 was for the last 2 years (behind my 6' Yamaha Grand Piano) before I placed my SVS in there. Oh yeah, my next job before the REF Calibration & fun started :frowning: , was to find a temporary storage location in our garage for the big SVS box!
Anyway, my wife has always let me decide what 2-ch Stereo (early '70's) and Home Theater (1998) equipment to choose based on our budget vs. sound quality** and/or profit sharing check!!! She is also use to large equipment since her late-father Engineered and sold Audio / Video Broadcasting Equipment in the SF Bay Area.
**We had a small jazz ensemble for about 5-6 years (semi-pro: me = keyboard, guitar, elec. bass, drums; my wife = drums, Ludwig Pro Set - until our 1st born son came), so the sound quality was always the 1st priority by getting the best performance vs. price.

No offense, but no matter how good they perform, they will never be a part of my theater. In my opinion, they are way too ugly, amateurish/hobby kit looking, water heaters...
Spoken like a true female :D
Repeat this mantra:
function followed by form
function followed by form
function followed by form
I guess you'd really hate my HUGE dual Tempest sonosub then. No biggie though as the wife actually helped to pick out the finish treatment/colors and hell yes she knows how to crank it up!!
And.....she has been known to great me in some of Fredericks finest.....Yes life can be good.......
