I watched The Godfather on DVD this weekend. I forgot how great this film was! I am a huge fan of Martin Scorsese, and I love Goodfellas. But The Godfather was better than I had remembered. Great acting, beautiful cinematography, excellent writing, etc. Now I am struggling with which one I like better!

Which do you prefer and why?

1)The Godfather (still the best gangster movie IMHO, the acting is simply superb)
2)The Godfather II (the greatest sequel ever made)
3)Goodfellas (probably the best movie of the 1990's)
11)The Godfather III

They are both movies that can't get much better. I prefer Goodfellas to the Godfather for the overall mood of the picture. Goodfellas is lower level guys fighting, while Godfather is the kings.

While I think The Godfather is the better film--by the slightest of margins--I prefer Goodfellas.

There always has to be one person that says this, but it bares repeating in this case: these are two wholly different films.
The Godfather is slow, languid, and rich, trying to get you into it's character's mind's, and their world.
GoodFellas is fast-paced, emotional, stylish, and rich with culture.
I think I'll do like Jack did: I think The Godfather maybe the better film, but GoodFellas is my favorite between the two.

I think it would be very unfair to compare the two because on one hand you have a great involved epic of a story/film series and on the other hand you have a really great gangster film. I'm not going to use the "ball-park" reference because of Sam Jackson and John Travolta.

I think Goodfellas is a great movie, but...
I think the Godfather is a much greater movie.

I attempted to write my own statement, but these are my sentiments - EXACTLY.

We have three people saying that The Godfather is the better film, but they prefer Goodfellas.
This seems to be a somewhat contradictory statement to me. If you think one movie is the better movie (in your opinion), why wouldn't it be the movie that you prefer?

Rob, it's not contradictory at all. Citizen Kane is perhaps the greatest movie ever made, but I'd rather watch Saturday Night Fever.
SNF is high up on my favourites list and I DO think it's a terrific movie, but I'm not under any delusions about it being one of the best films ever made.

I think the thread would've been better titled if it was called The Corleones vs. Pauly's Gang.

b]The Godfather[/b]is the best MOVIE ever made. Of course I read the book first and saw it during it's theatrical release.
If I had starting watching movies in the 80's then I can see the interest in Goodfellas. Mostly I think it as another white trash gangster movie. Maybe more accurate than The Godfather but not as much fun.
I never looked at The Godfather as a gangster movie. That would be like saying that Citizen Cane was the best movie about newspaper publishing, or Casablancawas the best movie about nightclub owners, or
The Graduate was the best movie about college graduation.
Carlo, don't tell me that The Godfather is a gangster flick, it insults my intelligence, now who put you up to it? Was it Barzini?

The Godfather is one of my favorite movies. I love The Godfather. Seen it several times, couldn't wait to get the DVD box, watched it immediately, I can't say it strongly enough: I LOVE THE GODFATHER!
That said, I think GoodFellas is a much better film. (In fact, I'd say it's the best movie I've ever seen.)
I'm also confused by the idea that you prefer one movie to another when you think the other is better. I don't buy the notion that a solemn, or dramatic, or dignified, or important subject matter makes a movie "better." If I would rather watch Romy & Michele's High School Reunion than Citizen Kane, that's because I think Romy is the better film. (No knock against Kane, a damn good flick. However, it's not in Romy's league. :))
