Hi Russ, 10 years ago we were both adamant that HD wasn't really necessary, pointing our fingers and laughing at people who were buying into blu-ray. "very happy with DVD" was our mantra. We capitulated. Here we are hundreds of blu-rays later.
The Japanese have an 8k tv channel. [cue eye rolling]
Did you buy the William Castle collection at Amazon? A bit pricey for me. I'll wait till they're giving them away.
honestly, HD isn't really necessary, but it sure is nice, eh? I haven't made the leap to 4k yet, but will eventually. My upgrades from DVD to blu have been pretty minimal, most of my blu purchases is simply buying the "best version" option. Doesn't make sense buying a DVD if a blu is out, right? (I don't even acquire the highest quality on digital downloads, 780dpi or around there looks good enough for me...)
I've not bought the indicator William Castle sets, or the even nicer looking Ray Harryhausen one, or the drool worthy Hammer sets. I have most of the material on DVD, and it's "good enough." Especially on the Castle where something like THE TINGLER would be great in the best quality, but ZOT! not worth ever buying again. The set you linked though is pretty solid. I only own two Indicator releases, HARDCORE with puritan George C Scott rambling around massage parlours looking for his missing girl that is in the porn movies? Why go to massage parlours? Who knows, but it was a good movie regardless. NIGHT OF THE DEMON was a no brainer, I've been waiting for ages to own it and it couldn't have worked out better. All the versions to not watch! All the special features to maybe watch once! Can't wait to get to it!
My take is that BD is really great for color films but not so much for B&W films. It's the extra color resolution that I really notice. For example I can't see buying a BD version of The Third Man since I have the DVD from Criterion.
Just back from Vegas. Pretty chilly, but I still spent hours standing outside watching the bands.
Saw Thirty Seconds to Mars in concert. There were 4 hours of waiting and opening acts before them, so it tried my patience a lot. Especially since the opening acts -- a dj, guy singing "message" songs, electronic music guy and young female singer -- did not really match the main act. Still enjoyed Thirty Seconds, and Jared Leto sounds terrific live. He had his "jesus" hair and beard going.
Have slowed down buying blu-rays a bit -- sometimes the digital is good enough for me. Once in a while, if the 4K set is pretty cheap, I'll get that, although I don't plan to upgrade for a while.
Somehow, my DVR conked out while I was away and didn't record all my shows. So I'll have to do the "on demand" and sit through commercials. Scared me that it had totally failed, as I have tons on the hard drive, but it was OK after several reboots.
We're in the middle of the Holi-taint! Wishing you all the best, hoping you had a happy Christmas if you celebrate and if not, you had a great time regardless!
