Screensize vs viewing distance (1 Viewer)

Is there a general guideline for the ratio of screensize to viewing distance. For example I have a distance of 14 feet from my screen to the viewer. I would appreciate any opinions regarding what maximum screen size I should consider for this distance.

isn't it 2.5 times the diagonal screen size?
50' TV would mean that you would have to sit 125 inches away.
... or was it 1.5??
