Still a few movies I have to see so maybee some editing.

1. Return of the King
2. Whale Rider
3. Kill Bill
4. Raising Victo Vargas
5. Bend it like Beckham
6. Finding Nemo
7. The Last Samurai
8. Sea Biscuit
9. Open Range
10. All The Real Girls

Still need to see Lost In Translation, from everything I know about it I bet it finds a place on this list.

There were a lot of foreign films that just hit DVD this year that I saw, if this were a top 10 movies i've seen this year I'd have to add.

The Cuckoo
Nowhere in africa
Russian Ark

All 3 would be very high in my list if eligable.

Updated with the fantastic American Splendor. It placed at #4 on my list putting it right after Lost in Translation and right before The Shape of Things.

Going to see Big Fish in about 3 hours.

I put In America at #3. Great script, strong acting.

I also swapped around M&C and Mystic River, mainly because I think In America was better at being an "actors film" than MR was, which in turn dropped it a bit in my eyes (not that much though).

I bumped Whale Rider by swapping it with PotC. What can I say, when it comes down to tough decisions I love that pirate film. I guess that's a good sign that it worked for me.

Back from Big Fish. Good film, but not good enough for my Top Ten.

American Splendor bumped Finding Nemo from the list.

Added Capturing the Friedmans to my film list. Still stewing on it to see if it's Top Ten material.

Updated to include Open Range. Very good, solid film but won't bump anything out of my top 10.

That brings me to 112 films seen from 2003
25 of the top 30 films seen
next up: Raising Victor Vargas

Ack, it's taking 90 or so minutes per 100 items to enter Perez' list -- mostly because most of his titles are French (probably originating at festivals), and I have to go back and forth between IMDB (to verify the title and year), and my admin data entry webpage, and Michael's HTF post, and then his selected titles in my database -- which for each new title takes about 5 minutes each (argh!). As I'm doing this on evenings where I have some spare time here and there, not all his titles are in my database (yet). I have 200 thus far and am somewhere in the L's. I'll have them fully entered for the next update, I swear! (but don't hold me to that :)).

Hmm...methinks I should use Michael's list for 2004 and enter them into my database as he posts new films in his list, so I don't have to do it en-masse at the end of the year. Whoa, what a concept! :)

Hey Michael, you wanna be an admin for my Film Tracker tool? Pay sucks (read: non-existent), but there's a small (REALLY small) amount of prestige with it! :D Plus I can create a stylesheet for you that matches your post's style in the 2xxx Film List threads.

Anyway...I'll have everybody else's posts since last Friday's update (and with Fate and luck willing, Michael's humungo-list :)) reflected in the next update later this week.

Thanks for everybody's support (and patience)!

Dana,
Whoa... I can't believe how much time you're devoting to this (though, I REALLY do appreciate it). Is there any way that I can help? I manage my list using a MySQL database (with a PHP frontend), so maybe I can just export it to you somehow?
Are you trying to make me feel guilty for seeing so many films? ;)
Tell me more about this Film Tracker tool...

Nah, don't worry about the time spent, it's a labor of love :)

The Film Tracker tool was created not only to track a member's films for any given year, but also to generate (HTML/VB) output that can then be copied/pasted into the 2xxx Film List threads. Hardly anybody's using it right now, it's running on a poor little P2-Celeron 300mhz with 128mb of RAM (with Windows 2000 Server using .NET -- yikes), with a REALLY pathetic upstream bandwidth from Comcast, so it can be a little slow at times, but it's not horribly bad at all. You can also track DVDs as well (so I changed the name of the tool to HTF Film Tracker + :)).

I figure I'll have your list done later this week so it's not too big of a deal. What I'm doing is only entering the basic film details (year-category, title, genre, release type, and feature type) and ignoring the rest (director, studio, running time, aspect ratio, links to IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes), just so I can get all those titles into the database -- right now I only just need the title and year to generate the stats, but the other 4 are really simple to enter, but the other stuff takes time and can be filled in later.

I've PM'd you with your username/password and other details, if you want to take a look @ the site.

Updated my list with In America at #2. I also bumped Big Fish off the list, and moved M&C up a few spots. Also added a link to my 2003 List.

Great job with the top 30 Dana, without it, these lists would get quite dull. :)

Ok, this update includes everybody's updates in this thread, and those who've posted in this thread that they've updated their 2003 Film List posts. (I was being slightly lazy this time; I didn't go through every member in this list and check their 2003 Film List post for updates, so the counts may be slightly off.) I have good news, though (and it's not "I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico" :)): I finally finished entering Michael Perez' 388 films!

Just a couple notes:

I ran a query to return the top 300 films (I snuck into my database and changed the stored proc to return the top 300, just for a moment so I could check out what the list would be like). Only 127 films have been ranked, out of 648 titles marked in my database for 2003 (the vast majority of the 648 are film-festival/non-U.S. films). I'm quite pleased that my #2 film (the only film in my top 10 that's not in our Top 30 list) is at #49, just squeaking into the top 50 :) The five that just missed the list are May (33), Love Actually (26), Cabin Fever (25), Cold Mountain (25), and The Station Agent (24).

Also, I compared this year's member count to this time last year, and we're not that far off (I posted an update Feb. 26th that had 77 members; this post has 73).

Thanks, Seth, for that lesson on vote-splitting (in the Oscars thread) -- it was pretty fascinating (though I admit I'd seen something similar to that before). The whole "select your #1 favorite" method doesn't always tell the whole story, which is why I've tried to provide as many options in the stats as I can (while still retaining my sanity :)). Hopefully the additional columns beyond the simple total-tally add some meaning to our Top 10 lists.

[EDIT: D'oh! I had somehow forgotten to enter Jason Seaver's Top 10 list! I actually entered his films seen from the 2003 Film List, but didn't enter his Top 10 list, and by default anybody with less than 10 films RANKED doesn't appear in the list. I've corrected my gaffe, and there are now 73 members listed.]
Ok, enough rambling. Here ya go...
