Here's a scoop (less than 2 hours ago ... read this news a few minutes it came out earlier) from

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...rit_nominees_2

'Splendor,' Among Spirit Award Nominees
1 hour, 58 minutes ago

NEW YORK - It'll be an all-American Independent Spirit Awards ceremony, with "American Splendor" and "In America" among the nominees for best feature.

Other nominees in that category, announced Wednesday, are "Lost in Translation," starring Bill Murray (news) and Scarlett Johansson (news) as jet-lagged Americans in Japan; "Raising Victor Vargas," about a Dominican teenager growing up on New York's Lower East Side; and "Shattered Glass," starring Hayden Christensen (news) as disgraced journalist Stephen Glass.

"American Splendor" blends actors, the real people they're playing and animation to tell the story of comic book writer Harvey Pekar. "In America" is director Jim Sheridan's semi-autobiographical tale of a family of Irish immigrants in New York.

In the best-actor category, the nominees are Peter Dinklage for "The Station Agent," Paul Giamatti (news) for "American Splendor," Ben Kingsley (news) for "House of Sand and Fog," Murray for "Lost in Translation" and Lee Pace for "Soldier's Girl."

The best-actress nominees are Agnes Bruckner for "Blue Car," Zooey Deschanel (news) for "All the Real Girls," Samantha Morton (news) for "In America," Elizabeth Moss for "Virgin" and Charlize Theron (news) for "Monster."

Winners will be announced Feb. 28 in Santa Monica, Calif. The show will air live at 5 p.m. EST on IFC and will be rebroadcast at 10 p.m. EST on Bravo.

The Independent Spirit Awards, organized by the Independent Film Project, recognize the best in smaller-budget films. The ceremony takes place each year on the Saturday before the Oscars (news - web sites).

No problem. :)

Just for fun (or not), I'm going to post the National Board of Review winners in the four major categories from the past five years. Winners that later matched up with the Oscars are in red.

2002

Best Picture: The Hours
Best Actor: Campbell Scott - Roger Dodger
Best Actress: Julianne Moore - Far From Heaven
Best Director: Phillip Noyce - Rabbit Proof Fence and The Quiet American

2001

Best Picture: Moulin Rouge
Best Actor: Billy Bob Thornton - Monster's Ball
Best Actress: Halle Berry - Monster's Ball
Best Director: Todd Field - In the Bedroom

2000

Best Picture: Quills
Best Actor: Javier Bardem - Before Night Falls
Best Actress: Julia Roberts - Erin Brockovich
Best Director: Steven Soderbergh - Traffic and Erin Brockovich

1999

Best Picture: American Beauty
Best Actor: Russell Crowe - The Insider
Best Actress: Janet McTeer - Tumbleweeds
Best Director: Anthony Minghella - The Talented Mr. Ripley

1998

Best Picture: Gods and Monsters
Best Actor: Ian McKellen - Gods and Monsters
Best Actress: Fernanda Montenegra - Central Station
Best Director: Shekhar Kapur - Elizabeth

So, overall, these awards haven't matched up all that much with the Oscars. Having said that, I predict that Mystic River will be a lock for a Best Picture nomination and that Diane Keaton will get some serious Oscar buzz.
