Okay, this is my not-so-comfortable list of choices. So many potential candidates, it's still pretty hard to narrow things down, especially for the big categories.

Oh, I must ask something: Have there ever been any other years that have had more films with two-part names for titles (colons separating the names: LOTR:ROTK, M&C:TFSOTW, POTC:TCOTBP, KB:V1, T3:ROTM)...yikes!

Note: I'm bowing out of the Foreign Film category this year -- I think I've not seen a single title in the eligible films list, and since there are too many to simply guess, I'd rather not make a total fool of myself :) The other categories I'm not providing my guesses for are the Shorts categories (live action, animated, documentary).

Best Picture
• Cold Mountain
• Finding Nemo
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
• Mystic River

Yes, I think FN will beat out Seabiscuit. If Cold Mountain doesn't make it, I think Lost in Translation will make it.

Best Director
• Clint Eastwood, Mystic River
• Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Anthony Minghella, Cold Mountain
• Gary Ross, Seabiscuit
• Peter Weir, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Very tough field this year. I can see Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) getting in in plcae of Minghella or Ross, or perhaps Inarritu for 21 Grams.

Best Actor
• Russel Crowe, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
• Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
• Ben Kingsley, House of Sand of Fog
• Jude Law, Cold Mountain
• Sean Penn, Mystic River

I know CM got killed at the SAGs, but I still think Law will get nommed here over Bill Murray. I can see the potential for Peter Dinklage making the list, but only in place of Law or Crowe -- Penn, Kingsley, and Depp are near-locks, Depp mainly for extraordinary popularity and a snub of him will NOT go well with the Awards viewing audience.

Best Actress
• Diane Keaton, Something's Gotta Give
• Nicole Kidman, Cold Mountain
• Chalize Theron, Monster
• Naomi Watts, 21 Grams
• Evan Rachel Wood, Thirteen

I'm pretty much in perfect agreement with Sijmen on this category. I haven't seen Thirteen, so I'm going on faith for Wood's performance there (I thought she was the weakest part of The Missing, so I have some reservations).

Best Supporting Actor
• Chris Cooper, Seabiscuit
• Albert Finney, Big Fish
• Benicio del Toro, 21 Grams
• Tim Robbins, Mystic River
• Peter Saarsgard, Shattered Glass

I'm a little unsure on Cooper, primarily because of his strong win last year -- I think his Seabiscuit performance wasn't nearly as strong as that, but if Crowe can get nommed again for M&C, I think Cooper can pull off a nom here. However, I can see Watanabe getting a nom for The Last Samurai. Eugene Levy was pretty damned great in A Mighty Wind, but I don't see him making it in this large crowd.

Best Supporting Actress
• Keisha Castle-Hughes, Whale Rider
• Patricia Clarkson, Pieces of April
• Holly Hunter, Thirteen
• Scarlett Johansson, Lost in Translation
• Renee Zellweger, Cold Mountain

Another tough category. The only locks I can see are Zellweger and Castle-Hughes (though I do find it a crime that Castle-Hughes is considered for Supporting instead of the main Best Actress).

Best Animated Feature
• Finding Nemo
• Sennen joyu (Millennium Actress)
• Les triplettes de Belleville (The Triplettes of Belleville)

I haven't seen Tokyo Godfathers, which is the other animated title by the director of Millennium Actress; Entertainment Weekly is calling for TG over MA, but I think MA has a little more visibility, so I'll go with that.

Best Foreign-Language Film
(No full predictions, but I'd bet any money that Canada's Les invasions barbares (The Barbarian Invasions) makes the cut.)

Best Cinematography
• Russell Boyd and Sandi Sissel, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
• Roger Deakins, House of Sand and Fog
• Andrew Lesnie, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• John Seale, Cold Mountain
• John Toll, The Last Samurai

Man oh man, how I'd love to see Winged Migration make this list.

Best Film Editing
Kill Bill: Vol. 1
The Last Samurai
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Mystic River

Best Adapted Screenplay
• American Splendor
• Cold Mountain
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Mystic River
• Seabiscuit

About the only field I can feel comfortable with all 5.

Best Original Screenplay
• Dirty Pretty Things
• In America
• Lost in Translation
• The Station Agent
• 21 Grams

The Magdalene Sisters might make it in place of either In America or The Station Agent; I don't see Love Actually, The Last Samurai, or Kill Bill: Vol. 1 making the cut.

Best Original Score
• Danny Elfman, Big Fish
• Howard Shore, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Randy Newman, Seabiscuit
• James Newton Howard, Peter Pan
• Hans Zimmer, The Last Samurai

I don't see Pirates of the Caribbean making this -- the score sounds too much like other films of the action genre (though that never stopped the Academy before for recognizing John Williams over and over and over again :)). *Maybe* Finding Nemo will get the nom, but I personally wasn't too inspired by the score.

Best Original Song
• "Into the West", The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
• "Man of the Hour", Big Fish
• "A Mighty Wind", A Mighty Wind
• "School of Rock", School of Rock
• "Time Enough for Tears", In America

I'm just going with the consensus on "Man of the Hour" and "Time Enough for Tears"; I've not seen the films they came from.

Best Sound
• Kill Bill: Vol. 1
• The Last Samurai
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
• Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines

Best Sound Editing
• Kill Bill: Vol. 1
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Best Visual Effects
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
• Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Best Art Direction
• Down with Love
• The Last Samurai
• Girl with a Pearl Earring
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Best Costume Design
• Down with Love
• The Last Samurai
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
• Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Best Makeup
• The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
• Monster
• Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Best Documentary Feature
• The Argronomist
• Balseros
• Capturing the Friedmans
• The Fog of War
• Ônibus 174 (Bus 174)

Well, only 2 people on HTF saw Balseros, but both rated it relatively high (Scott Weinberg 4.5/5, NickNC 3/4), so I'll go with that one for the 4th slot. The 5th one is totally open, but I'll take a stab for The Argronomist (I admit I'm just judging by description and not by actual quality -- I've not seen a single documentary in this list, sadly).

For those keeping score, I've updated my list to include Original Score, Original Song, and Cinematography.

I still need Art Direction, Costume, Foreign Language Film, and Makeup. I will not be filling in details for Short/Live, Short/Animated, and Documentary/Short, as I've not seen a single one of these (except Short/Animated, where I've seen the 9 Animatrix shorts, but I've not seen enough to know what else could/would qualify).

Not fully decided on a few still...

Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role 4 of 5
Sean Penn (winner)
Bill Murray
Russell Crowe (wrong)
Jude Law

Ben Kingsley
Johnny Depp (well, I was choosing between the right two guys I guess :) ).

Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role 3 of 5
Tim Robbins (winner)
Willam H Macy (wrong)

Alec Baldwin
Ken Watanabe
Albert Finney (wrong)

(I wasn't really done looking at this category, but I also hadn't seen enough of the films either)

Performance By An Actress In A Leading Role 3 of 5
Charleze Theron (winner)
Nicole Kidman (wrong)
Evan Rachel Wood (wrong)
Naomi Watts
Diane Keaton

(Whale Rider suprise, still hadn't seen In America which made me forget about Morton who was an early favorite here)

Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role 3 of 5
Renee Zellweger (winner)
Holly Hunter
Marsha Gay Harden

(I hadn't finished looking into this one. If you only guess 3 then you definitely can't get them all right. At least I called the Harden thing)

Best Animated Feature Film Of The Year 2 of 3
Finding Nemo (winner)
Triplets of Bellville

(Again I was unfinished on research, mainly because I wasn't sure they would really give it to Brother Bear)

Achievement In Art Direction 3 of 5
ROTK (winner)
Seabiscuit
Mystic River
Cold Mountain (wrong)
Lost in Translation (wrong)

(well, the other 2 were a big period piece and a small, intimate film at least :) )

ROTK (winner) (wrong, so its not going to win I guess ;) )
Seabiscuit (possible upset, but not likely) (the new fav to win)
Cold Mountain
Mystic River (wrong)
Last Samurai (wrong)

(If I'd known that City of God actually had anyone's attention then I would have put it down for many categories, especially direction and editing. The nom here is a nice surprise though. I should have put M&C on there, not sure what I was thinking on that one).

Achievement In Costume Design
ROTK (winner)
Cold Mountain (wrong)
Big Fish (wrong)
Master and Commander
Kill Bill (wrong, I thought some Bill love might sneak in)

Achievement In Directing 4 of 5
Jackson
Weir
Coppola
Eastwood
Minghella (wrong, but City of God does deserve it more that's for sure)

Best Documentary Feature 2 of 5
The Fog of War
Capturing the Friedmans

(I guessed 2 and got them right. Now if only I get to see them :) ).

Best Documentary Short Subject[/b] no guesses made
???

Achievement In Film Editing 3 of 5
ROTK (winner)
Mystic River (wrong)
Master and Commander
Seabiscuit
Lost in Translation (wrong)

(again, if I'd know CoG was in the running...and Cold Mountain made sense since it cut between 2 storylines so often and well)

Best Foreign Language Film Of The Year 1 of 5 (I had no idea on this one)
Barbarian Invasions
Osama

Achievement In Makeup 2 of 3
ROTK (winner)
Pirates of the Carribean
Monster (wrong)
(I thought the Theron transformation would open up some more love for that film here)

Achievement In Music - Original Score 3 of 5
ROTK (winner) I think they let Shore in this time
Cold Mountain
Big Fish

In America (I didn't finish my guesses here because I was kind of stumped after the first 3)

Achievement In Music - Original Song 1 of 5
ROTK
Big Fish (wrong)
(needed to research more here too, but man only 1 of 2 is not good)

Best Motion Picture Of The Year 4 of 5

Lost in Translation
Master and Commander

Best Animated Short Film no guesses

Best Live Action Short Film no guesses

Updated my list to now include Costume, Makeup, Foreign-Language Film, and Animated. I also corrected my mistake for the Documentary category (bummer Winged Migration isn't considered, and I'm guessing Spellbound was considered last year).

Excepting glaring errors, I won't be making any further updates

Dana, hopefully it will make you feel better to know that both Winged Migration & Spellbound were nominated for Best Documentary Feature last year. :)
