I still need to see the new production of All Quiet on the Western Front. I've been putting it off, because of the grim subject, but I think I'll give it a try.

Wow - no actors from Women Talking?

And no Polley nom for directing???

Oh well - she's just one of the dozen or so greatest directors on the planet...

I guess McDonagh will win that one; brilliant writer, but director...?

Polley will likely win for best adapted screenplay, and the Black Panther song will win a little stauette as well, but I don't know that BP will win anything else, as I think some of those noms petained to the first flick.

Initial thoughts:

* Stephanie Hsu (and Jamie Lee!)! Steph was mentioned as a possibility, but it seemed like Jamie Lee was mentioned more. Bassett will/should win so it’s moot, but great to see both EEAAO actresses nom’d.

* haven’t seen Women Talking yet, but good to see this little film that’s more about acting, directing and script nom’d (eg. a film like 12 Angry Men).

* All Quiet on the Western Front getting some momentum… by the laws of subsets, it should win for Best International (as discussed in another thread)

* surprises (based on the pre-Oscars chatter) include Riseborough, Deadwyler missing out, and Top Gun no cinematography nom. Riseborough was #18 on Variety’s Best Actress nom predictions list.

More later…

I've been a fan of Stephanie Hsu since BE MORE CHILL, so I am glad she got in. She is great in EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE. Angela Bassett would still get my vote if I had one to give, but I'm glad to see her recognized.

The biggest disappointment for me is the lack of any nominations in any category at all for THE WOMAN KING. I guess the voters didn't respond to that film, but I think it is a masterpiece and time will be kind to it. At least it did well and was seen by a lot of people. This is by no means the only category in which I would nominate it, but in particular Terence Blanchard has never won Best Score before. He was shortlisted for it but not nominated. What does he have to do to win? His work for that movie was incredible.

If I made the nominations, I would take out ELVIS in order to put BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER in Best Picture contention.

I have seen half of the Best Picture nominees. I want to see TAR but missed it when it was in theaters last fall. I could rent it but have been waiting to see if nominations will prompt it to be reissued. I'm not particularly interested in the others that I chose not to see.

As far as I know, TOP GUN: MAVERICK is the third sequel to be nominated for Best Picture without its predecessor being nominated. The other two that come to mind are TOY STORY 3 and MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. On the subject of TOP GUN: MAVERICK, it should have been nominated for Best Cinematography.

And a Best Actress Nomination from the movie that leads the pack at the Razzies.

I would have nominated Ana de Armas a few years ago for KNIVES OUT. I haven't seen BLONDE and have no interest in doing so, so can't judge her performance here.

I never even heard of "To Leslie".

I've heard of it, but only this past weekend when a critic I follow predicted the nomination. Otherwise, I wouldn't have either.

Interesting that they went with Top Gun for a BP nom, but snubbed Wakanda Forever which seems to have the more prestigious noms in other categories, including Best (Supporting) Actress. Though I guess TG does have the screenplay nom.

Edited to note category is Supporting Actress.

As soon as I read this, I was praying it was the movie I hoped it would be, and it is! :)

There aren't enough scathing rebukes to aim at that flick...

I think Natu Natu from RRR will win.
Honestly, I'd be shocked. The BP song is not exactly a masterpiece, but I'm pretty sure it gets the nod if only for being the most gravitas-adjacent. But if the voters aren't familiar with great Bollywood tracks (I kinda think they are), Natu Natu might edge it out.

Perhaps the backlash at it being so incredibly historically inaccurate hurt it’s chances.

Yep, a big surprise that Riseborough is nom'd given how little it's been talked about. According to the ABC folks discussing the nominations, Riseborough funded her own campaign for Best Actress.

After two years of movies everyone immediately forgot existed once they won, the Oscars have got their primo heavyweight matchup: Everything Everywhere All At Once vs. The Fablemans. The Daniels vs. Spielberg. The Indie vs. the Legacy. The surprise smash vs the awards season darling that bellyflopped.

Oh yeah seven other movies got nominated too, but nobody cares about them. THIS IS THE BATTLE.
