    Craig's Picks

Here we go with my picks. Some notes:
    • My predicted winners are shown in red.
    • My preferred winners are shown in italics.
    • I attend an Oscar party every year. In categories with 5 nominees, we are required to choose 2 that won't win (we get 2 points for winners, 1 point for each non-winner we get correct). These are shown in strikethrough text.
    • For the pool there we are required to predict every category, even the shorts & documentaries. These predictions are included here, and are based solely on the synopses provided on the official Oscar web site and on this insightful post from, of all places, AICN.
    • Discounting the Documentary, Foreign Language & Short categories, I have seen all the major nominees except Talk To Her.
    • I have included a brief comment after each category, hopefully to explain my odder choices. [IMG]
Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role
    Adrian Brody - The Pianist
    Nicholas Cage - Adaptation
Michael Caine - The Quiet American
Daniel Day-Lewis - Gangs Of New York
    Jack Nicholson - About Schmidt

It feels like Nicholson has been fading, so Day-Lewis gets his 2nd golden boy.

Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role
    Chris Cooper - Adaptation
    Ed Harris - The Hours
Paul Newman - Road To Perdition
    John C. Reilly - Chicago
Christopher Walken - Catch Me If You Can

Despite Walken's triumph at the SAGs, this is still Cooper's to lose.

Performance By An Actress In A Leading Role
    Salma Hayek - Frida
    Nicole Kidman - The Hours
    Diane Lane - Unfaithful
Julianne Moore - Far From Heaven
    Renee Zellweger - Chicago

Kidman's momentum has continued unabated. She gets the big O for what is really a supporting role.

Performance By An Actress In A Supporting Role
    Kathy Bates - About Schmidt
    Julianne Moore - The Hours
    Meryl Streep - Adaptation
    Catherine Zeta-Jones - Chicago
    Queen Latifah - Chicago

Zeta-Jones deserves it, and she'll get it.

Best Animated Feature Film Of The Year
    Ice Age
    Lilo And Stitch
    Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron
    Spirited Away
    Treasure Planet

The safe bet is Lilo And Stitch, but Miyazaki's film is one of the most acclaimed of the year. I'll bet that Spirited Away sneaks through.

    Achievement In Art Direction
    Chicago
    Frida
    Gangs Of New York
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
    Road To Perdition

My one big gamble of the night. I'm guessing that Chicago & Gangs will split votes, and that Grant Major & team will get a much deserved Oscar here.

    Achievement In Cinematography
    Dion Beebe - Chicago
Edward Lachman - Far From Heaven
Michael Ballhaus - Gangs Of New York
    Pawel Edelman - The Pianist
Conrad Hall - Road To Perdition

    This one's a no-brainer. Hall in a runaway.

    Achievement In Costume Design
    Chicago
    Frida
    Gangs Of New York
    The Hours
    The Pianist

No real standouts here, but I'll go with the most memorable costume of the year - Bill the Butcher & his top hat.

    Achievement In Directing
    Rob Marshall - Chicago
Martin Scorsese - Gangs Of New York
    Stephen Daldry - The Hours
    Roman Polanski - The Pianist
Pedro Almodovar - Talk To Her

Scorsese will have to continue living without that Oscar, as Marshall takes it for his excellent job of bringing Chicago to the big screen.

    Best Documentary Feature
    Bowling For Columbine
    Daughter From Danang
    Prisoner Of Paradise
    Spellbound
    Winged Migration

I think the Academy is too conservative to give the award to Moore's pseudo-doc. Spellbound has received quite a bit of buzz recently and will surprise here.

    Best Documentary Short Subject
    The Collector Of Bedford Street
Mighty Times: The Legacy Of Rosa Parks
    Twin Towers
Why Can't We Be A Family Again?

Going with the 9/11 doc here.

    Achievement In Film Editing
    Chicago
    Gangs Of New York
    The Hours
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
    The Pianist

Tough call here - could go to Chicago or The Hours. I'll go with the latter, just on a hunch.

Best Foreign Language Film Of The Year
El Crimen Del Padre Amaro - Mexico
    Hero - China
The Man Without A Past - Finland
    Nowhere In Africa - Germany
Zus & Zo - The Netherlands

It's the story of Jews fleeing the Nazis to live in Africa, and it's been critically acclaimed. This one won't be close.

    Achievement In Makeup
    Frida
    The Time Machine

The most ridiculous category of the year. Hell, even critics who don't like the LotR films are questioning TTT's absence here. And what about the nice work in The Hours & Chicago? Oh well, give it to Frida.

    Achievement In Music (Original Score)
John Williams - Catch Me If You Can
Elmer Bernstein - Far From Heaven
    Elliot Goldenthal - Frida
    Philip Glass - The Hours
Thomas Newman - Road To Perdition

A really tough call here. Williams & Glass are both worthy (and Goldenthal won the Globes), but I'm guessing the Academy rewards Bernstein's lush, retro-score, which provided the proper 50s melodrama ambience for Todd Haynes' homage to Douglas Sirk.

    Achievement In Music (Original Song)
Bono, "The Hands That Built America" - Gangs Of New York
Eminem, "Lose Yourself" - 8 Mile
Elliot Goldenthal & Julie Taymor, "Burn It Blue" - Frida
Kander & Ebb, "I Move On" - Chicago
Paul Simon, "Father & Daughter" - The Wild Thornberries Movie

Everyone says Bono, but this is the only chance the Academy has to honor the music in the the first musical to win BP in 30 years. I say Kander & Ebb get it.

Best Motion Picture Of The Year
    Chicago
    Gangs Of New York
    The Hours
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
    The Pianist

    Well, duh!

    Best Animated Short Film
    The Cathedral
    The Chubb-Chubbs!
    Das Rad
    Mike's New Car
    Mt. Head

The wide exposure of The Chubb-Chubbs! should help it beat the Pixar entry.

    Best Live Action Short Film
    Fait D'Hiver
I'll Wait For The Next One
    Inja
    Johnny Flinton
    This Charming Man

Simply going with the AICN analysis here.

    Achievement In Sound
    Chicago
    Gangs Of New York
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
    Road To Perdition
    Spider-Man

Another tough call. Gotta go with the BP winner again here.

    Achievement In Sound Editing
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
    Minority Report
    Road To Perdition

I would venture to guess 90% of Academy members don't even know what this award is really for. So they'll go for the biggest picture of the three.

    Achievement In Visual Effects
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
    Spider-Man
Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones

Gollum was a breakthrough, and should take the LotR team to their 2nd straight Oscar.

Screenplay Based On Material Previously Produced Or Published
Peter Hedges, Chris & Paul Weitz - About A Boy
Charlie & Donald Kaufman - Adaptation
    Bill Condon - Chicago
    David Hare - The Hours
    Ronald Harwood - The Pianist

Gotta go with those wild & wacky Kaufman brothers. Can't wait to see Donald on stage! [IMG]

Screenplay Written Directly For The Screen
Todd Haynes - Far From Heaven
Jay Cocks, Kenneth Lonergan & Steven Zallian - Gangs Of New York
Nia Vardalos - My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Pedro Almodovar - Talk To Her
Carlos & Alfonso Cuaron - Y Tu Mama Tambien

Vardalos could surprise, but this gives the Academy a chance to give an award to the acclaimed Almodovar in a relatively weak category.

    Final Counts

    Chicago - 5
The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers - 3
    Adaptation - 2
Gangs Of New York - 2
    The Hours - 2

One win each for the following films:

The Chubb-Chubbs!, Far From Heaven, Frida, Nowhere In Africa, Road To Perdition, Spellbound, Spirited Away, Talk To Her, This Charming Man, Twin Towers

Count me in as one of those not riding in the Chicago bandwagon and hoping that they would lose in all the 13 categories they are nominated for? j/k [IMG] But anyway, I'm predicting Chicago will win big but am really personally hoping that they would be shutout of the major awards. They should just give them the awards for the song categories!

Anyway, I'm predicting just like in the past years, momentum will switch back and forth in favor of Chicago then to The Hours then back to Chicago ... then suddenly The Pianist will win Best Picture (WooHoo! Okay, I'm dreaming again. [IMG]) & Martin Scorsese getting his lifetime achievement award err Best Director Award.

I'll post my predictions later ...

    Here's my personal picks -

    Best Picture: The Pianist
Best Director: Tie between Roman Polanski, The Pianist & Pedro Almodovar, Talk To Her
Best Actor: Adrien Brody, The Pianist
Best Actress: Julianne Moore, Far From Heaven
Best Supporting Actor: Chris Cooper, Adaptation.
Best Supporting Actress: Meryl Streep, Adaptation.

    Best Picture: CHICAGO
Bob Fosse won for directing "Cabaret" but the film lost (to a mob film) this is the Academy's chance to rectify.

Best Director MARTIN SCORSESE (Should be Rob Marshal but Martin's never won and he's the sentimental favorite. He should have won for "Goodfellas" (a mob film)

Hmm, we could see the opposite of 1972
Best Picture: A Musical, Best Director: A Mob film

Best Actor JACK NICHOLSON (Daniel Day Lewis was also good, both have won in the past but Jack will break the record - 4 Awards)

Best Actress: RENE ZWELLWEGER She really hit a home run acting, singing, dancing.

*Nicole may win - but by a nose. I always thought Nicole's makeup is what impressed audiences about her performance, She's been inconsistent in the past (where as Rene has never been off). I don't see what all the admiration is about for Nicole's performance in THE HOURS, she had less screen time than Streep or Moore, (ok so she survived her divocre from T Cruise, but is that any reason to give her an award?)

    Best Sup Actor Chris Cooper
Best Sup Actress Julianne Moore (For Far From Heaven & The Hours in the past when an actor has been nominated in both catagories they usually win the supporting award)

"Gangs of New York" could take many awards as did "Titanic"
The screenplay was weak, but the film was epic. (I didn't think Titianic deserved the Oscar either, there were many better films released that year (L.A. Confidental/As Good as if Gets)

Just think about this phrase - "The Academy Award Nominee 'The Time Machine'"

This catagory should be dropped if they're gonna keep overlooking the obvious. Last year they shafted Planet of the Apes, so I guess this was to be expected this year....

Wow, I thought I filled this out. I guess I only filled out the nominations thread -- whatever happened to that thread? I can't find it in a search.

    Anyway, here are my predictions:

    Best Picture - Chicago
Best Actor (Lead) - Daniel Day Lewis

Best Actress (Lead) - Julianne Moore
Best Actress (Supporting) - Meryl Streep
Best Animated Feature - Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away)
    Art Direction - Chicago
Cinematography - Road to Perdition (I'd rather see Far From Heaven, my 2nd guess)
Costume Design - Chicago (Frida should win)
    Directing - Rob Marshall
Documentary (Feature) - Bowling for Columbine (I've not seen any, just going with the flow)
Documentary (Short) - Twin Towers (same as above)
    Film Editing - The Hours
Foreign Language Film - Nowhere in Africa (this category's rules suck)!
    Makeup - Frida (ditto!)
Music (Score) - Far from Heaven
Music (Song) - Bono, "The Hands that Built America"
Short (Animated) - Katedra (The Cathedral)
    Short (Live) - (abstain)

Visual Effects - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
    Screenplay (Adapted) - Adaptation.
Screenplay (Original) - Hable con Ella (Talk to Her) (Great goddess Hera, I hope Greek Wedding doesn't win this!!)

Okay..here are my pciks for the winners based on traditions of the Academy...and reasoning behind it.

    Actor:
Daniel Day Lewis - The Gangs of New York..The only redeaming thing about the film that made me sit up in my cahir when I wasn't shifting around in it. Even though it echoed De Niro. Since Jack got the award a couple of years ago and Lewis hasn't gotten it since My Left Foot I would say it would only be fair for Jack to share the wealth...I mean yeah Jack is grat but he gets nominated every time he doe a pic (except for Mars attacks which I thought he was snubbed for [IMG] )

Actress: Nicole Kidman - The Hours...Should have gotten it last year for Moulan Rouge and this is the academy ackowledging that she is a great actress. Renezellwigger even though she shines and steals the show in everything that she's in didn't quite steal the show in Chicago when she was sharing the screen with CZJ, Queen Latifa, or Richard Gere (Whom I thought should have been nominated too but thats another thread all together)

Supporting actor: Don't really have a favorite in this one didn't see Adaptation (will probably rent it later on in life) But I feel that John C. Reilly-even thought he didn't move me in his preformance in Chicago-will probably get it. I have always been wrong in this category thought.

Supporting actress: Hands Down CAthrine Zeta Jones - Chicago ...Nuff said.

ANimated feature: This could go two ways the academy could finally recognize that animation doesn't have to be for the kids and give it to Spirited Away (my pick) or go for the kid angle and give it to Lilo and Stitch (my girlfriends pick) either way those are the only two really worthy contenders in this category. (Treasure Planet WTF????)

Art Direction: Gangs of New York for not going digital even thought it would have cost a lot less

Cinematograhy: Another draw I loved Road To Perdidition's Cinematography and would be wonderful to give C. Hall one more post-humous oscar but thene theres chicago with it's beautiful color and lighting both beauts and I would have no qualms if either of those two win.

Costume design - A draw between Chicago or GONY. Historically accurate is something the academy loves and GONY supposedly has it but cicago has alot of style and clolor and va voom to it.

DIrecting - For a career that brought us Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Mean Streets, Taxi Drive (the list goes on and I think that you know who I'm talking about) the academy will just say Thank you to good ol Marty

Documentary - only saw one...and it wasn't nominated so I would have to go with good old Micheal Moore.

Editing - Another tough call but I would have to go with Cicago...yeah you try to edit a musical...it's tough. Battle scenes are fun and the Lord of the Rings will get it's glory in 2004.

Makeup - Frida or The time Machine....THere was more makeup last year than just these two...c'mon they nominated Treasure Planet for best Animated Feature for crimeny. I'll go with Frida cause I don't like to recognize pics that suck.

Music - what no Howard Shore??? I'll have to go with road to Perdition cause Catch me if you can's music was one of only two things that I thought was wrong with the pic. (besides episode 2 was a far better johnny williams score.

SOng - Loose Yourself is a great fricking song and I'm glad that it was nominated but It wont get it. Just like Blame Canada didn't get the oscar that it should have. C'mon Emenim sings it. He's too controversial for the academy. So my only concession...Chicago...I hate U2 and that song just din't fit with the movie at all.

Best Picture - Can you see where I'm going here? Yes Chicago...Even though I loved The Two Tower and it's release was perfectly timed with what's going on in the world today...The lord of the Rings will be honoured with everything that it deserved next year. Chicago would be the cocession piece for giving A Beautiful Mind Best Pic last year over Moulan Rouge.

SOund - Again Road To Perdition. Star Wars wasn't really as great with sound as Perdition was. Ben burtt is great but he's doing what he's been doing since ep.4

SOund Editing - the Two Towers. Lots of wonderful things going on all over the place.

Special Effect - Digital Gollum or Digital Yoda. YOda I really believed in and the lightsaber fight was great. But gollum I bought. I felt sorry for him and he moved me. Yoda entertained me. I'm going with TTT.

Adapted Screenplay - I love About A Boy. it should win. But Chicago will probably win over all.

Original Screenplay - My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It's only a given. GAngs of New York wasn't really original (hello speghetti western) And the other three are filler in a very dry year in hollywood. Why not give the highest grossing independant feature a break.

I'll make two predictions of a sort.

Neither Lilo & Stitch, nor Lord of the Rings will win best picture in their categories, which will piss me off yet again (see my sig [IMG]).

I deliberately spread out the actorly awards which Chicago or hours could sweep, and I think Chicago could take either art direction or costume, but most of the rest are pretty gut instinct without any input from this thread.

    right now it stands at
    5 wins for Chicago
4 wins for Gangs of New York
    2 wins for Two Towers
    2 for the Hours
    0 for Pianist

so you can see from those numbers that I'm probably very very wrong

Chicago gets two major categories, GONY gets two major categoires, The Hours gets two major categories, TTT is shut out of the major eight the rest of which go to award the highly lauded (critically) Adaptation and (popular) My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Two Towers picks up the two technical categories, losing sound because the academy will vote that as an apology to Chicago because their original song was wretched and not awarded.

The production categories go to a wide variety of noms, mostly to Gangs and Chicago which take art direction and song; and costume and editing respectively. The rest is a fairly rare wide spread, awarding Frida, Catch Me if YOu Can, Road to Perdition each one because Two Towers was shut out of the first two and for cinematography because Conrad Hall died, meaning he'll get the oscar he very justly deserved (and probably wouldn't have been nominated for had he not) where Two Towers was also shut out of (FOTR won all three last year btw).

The categories essentially no one cares about, are guesses, except for Bowling for Columbine, which could very easily lose because of restrictive screening tactics from Sony on the part of Winged Migration, in which case it will likely go to Spellbound. Foreign film Nowhere in Africa has the most current buzz plus it takes place in the academy's extras special favorite time period--the holocaust. The shorts are a toss up, and a lot of people say the Chubb Chubbs because they've seen it online (I couldnt'find it) or like the title, but I'm going with the power of Pixar here. docu short is a random guess just like everyone that didn't see them is doing. Animated feature will go to Spirited Away because I think there are restrictions on voting in that category as well, and if not the title has very high awareness in LA.
