In October, I was blown away by the spectacular visuals of the trailer found on the Final Fantasy DVD. The movie was finally released in the U.S. on Friday, and it has been receiving rave reviews: Roger Ebert calls it one of the best animated movies he has ever seen, and James Cameron calls it the new milestone in anime. I am wondering what people here think of it?

I'll tell you Saturday, I promise. For some reason it got delayed a week here in Boston.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason for the delay involves booking Ron Jeremy for a Q&A for Porn Star. If so, I think the indie theaters have their priorities completely out of whack.

Rusty, I checked a couple of movie theater websites and I doubt metropolis is playing anywhere in Dallas. At least not yet.

If I find out I'll call you.

It's currently playing in nine theaters only. It will be expanding, though; here's the locations, straight from the horse's mouth, US release producer Mike Schlesinger on usenet:

Yes, it's holding at the Dupont in DC. In L.A. it's moving over to--believe it or not--the Chinese! We're also adding Boston, Toronto and Vancouver on Friday.

I've seen this movie during Sony's promotion in Los Angeles way back in the summer or Fall. Great movie. I own the R2 DVD already and reviewing it once more in all its glory.

I hope it expands to Philly soon enough, we're the 4th largest city and we never get stuff first week :frowning:

Jason, did you get that from myBC.com?
I know that a LOT of time when they post their listings on Thursday nights, a lot of things get revised the next day.
For instance, the 5th Avenue theatre always seems to list a movie called "The Weekend" on myBC. I couldn't say why, but it always seems to be corrected the next day.
I saw a poster for Metropolis at Tinseltown (aka Tonsil-Town) the other day, so I wonder if it'll be playing there. It's just sort of hard to imagine that an anime film would be only playing in the burbs.
Suits me either way, since I work at Metrotown. :)

Tim,
Thanks for mentioning that. I also just went to the Famous Players site and they also list Metropolis as showing:

If you get the paper in the morning Tim, check the theater listings and get back to me if it's playing. I have an eager anime friend here in Victoria that wants to see it.
I too find it odd that "Metropolis" is opening at, natch, Metropolis. I figured this is the kind of film that would open downtown at Granville or (especially) at Tinseltown.
I may be coming to Van the weekend of 2/15, so if it's still playing I will definately check it out. You're more than welcome to join me Tim, as we still have yet to meet. :)

I'm looking very much forward to this release. I'm a big fan of anime (and a big fan of Cameron), so I think it will be worth a look...

Can someone provide a basic plot summary?

I too watched the preview on the FF disc, and I wasn't impressed. The visuals were decent, but they seemed to be from random, disconnected scenes -- giving me no idea of the story. And instead of explanatory dialog, there was some cheesy, unrelated rock music playing over it.

I hope it is good, but the preview didn't pique my interest. (Who knows, perhaps it will turn out to be as excellent as Princess Mononoke, one of my favorite movies.)

There was no dialogue because it's subtitled. They NEVER put foreign language dialogue in trailers :frowning:
