Devil’s advocate argument: the article cites directors like Colin Treverrow and Damien Chizelle as the types of budding filmmakers who may have a harder time jumping as quickly from smaller budget projects to big budget studio pictures. I would argue that neither director was ready for the leap when they made it and have yet to make a film that justifies the hype they came up with. More experience and more seasoning would have been good for those two. I would put someone like Gareth Edwards in the same category. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to say, “maybe we shouldn’t take someone who just made a micro budget feature and give them the reins to a $100+ million tentpole”. I don’t think doing so yielded films that justified the expense and I don’t think it did those filmmakers any favors moving them up the ranks before they had more experience under their belts.

It's a shame that I've been seeing people lambasting The Fall Guy for not having huge numbers for the first weekend of May. The vast majority of big films opening the first weekend in May for the past 2 decades have been huge established franchises. The Fall Guy is a good movie, it's not it's fault that Marvel moved Deadpool because of the strikes.

You're right. But even if The Fall Guy had opened to those numbers on another weekend, it would still have a problem. Opening with $27 million when projections were expecting $30 to $35 million is a shortfall. Universal seems to have spent too much money. The Numbers has its budget listed at $125 million. I've seen somewhere else (though I forget where) say it was $130 million. That is an insane amount of money to spend on that movie, and the opening makes it difficult to see a pathway to profitability. We'll see what happens.

International or bust I guess. The Fast and Furious films make big bank overseas, so maybe there's a chance.

Would seem kinda weird if this actually does unexpectedly better internationally than here... although I suppose most American movie-goers these days don't have much, if any, fond memories of the old 80's TV show. I actually ended up giving this another chance on Wed and even noticed one very brief reference (w/ sound FX) to The Six Million Dollar Man this 2nd time (and missed the 1st time), LOL -- that definitely made me chuckle, but I can't imagine many, if any, others at my screenings got the reference. I suspect I musta missed some other (easter egg type) references since I'm not steeped in those old shows (and hadn't seen them since their airings/reruns in the 80's)...

I think in this case the source material is sort of irrelevant to the film's appeal. As you said, most don't really remember the show anyway.

The performances of some other TV-based films show strong international potential:

Baywatch (2017) 67% of box office was international ($120 million)
Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) 58% international ($66 million)
The A-Team (2010) 56% international ($100 million)

I think in this case the source material is sort of irrelevant to the film's appeal. As you said, most don't really remember the show anyway.

The performances of some other TV-based films show strong international potential:

Baywatch (2017) 67% of box office was international ($120 million)
Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) 58% international ($66 million)
The A-Team (2010) 56% international ($100 million)
Yeah, that's what remakes are usually for. For a lot of people, the only expectation they have is just that it be a good movie. They don't care as much about comparing it to past installments or the TV series.
