I was wanting to know, also, if this is the same version as the Criterion.

I believe it's coming in the late spring, and yes, it's the same Director's Cut that's on the Criterion. I'll probably buy this one for the new transfer, but the Criterion has some excellent exclusive supplements (such as the magazine article) and the totally bitchin packaging that makes it a keeper

Jeff,

Believe it or not, I'm 29, and watched Robocop for the first time the other night when I rented the Criterion version. Do you think the longer version is better than the theatrical cut? Or, is it just more gory?

I want to buy just one verison of this film.

Thanks.

It's more than just more gory. When Murphy gets killed, you
actually see his head bits exit the back of his head,
adding more shock and realism to the scene. The dummy they
used for this part is incredibly well detailed, and Peter
was disappointed when he had to get rid of the shot.
And when ED209 kills the suit in the boardroom, it goes on
for a lot longer. It's really over the top.
I would wait for the uncut MGM version to come out. The R2
version is reviewed at www.dvddebate.com.

I have the Criterion version and I know that the MGM version won't have all the extra's that the Criterion version has *MGM likes to do their own extras, and Criterion doesn't like to sell off their extras that they have made all the time to other companys* so my guess is that the Robocop DVD will have a ton of new stuff on it

I heard the the MGM R2 release will have branch seaming and will contain the original and director's cut. I would think Region 1 would get a similar release (as what happenend with Terminator: SE). I think I'll just hold off for now and see.

The R2 version contains the not-so-seamless branching. I heard there are four noticeable pauses during the director's cut. I'm waiting for the R1 version.
