Just because a film is open matte/full frame, that doesn't mean the MIDDLE of the frame is always where the intended framing should be. I may not understand this correctly, but when framing the movie the DP/editor/telecine guy can move up and down in the frame if needed.
Full frame transfers of 1.85:1 films, 98% of the time, NEVER use the entire 100% filmed negative. The film is reframed shot by shot on the telecine to remove pesky things like boom mikes, camera flaps, wires and also for compositional purposes. There's also hard mattes in the camera used for visual effects shots (though I doubt there are many in this film) that must be cropped out. This is a lot more work than simply releasing a matted widescreen version.
Never assume that just because it's full frame and shot 1.85:1, that it's open matte. It never is.

I love this movie! I think it's better than X-mas story.
