'Tis the season for Christmas movies and I have a hankerin' to watch Chevy and the gang. Is this movie available in a widescreen format? I saw it tonight on DVD at the video store but it was only full screen.

I'm really hoping this movie is someday soon released in its OAR - great movie but I won't buy it in P&S.

Scott- If you like the movie, buy it. You'll be waiting for
ever to have this film released in widescreen. Besides, you
are NOT buying a pan&scam disc, this is just an open matte.
    So it is really fullscreen.

    It's not in it's OAR.
The motto around here is "NO OAR = NO SALE ".
I got all 3 existing Vacation DVDs as gifts a couple of years ago, unfortunately. Unfortunate because all of them are MAR releases.
Next year WB is putting out European Vacation on DVD for the 1st time. We should pressure them for OAR on it. Maybe they can be convinced to re-release the other 3 in OAR so that we can get a nice OAR Vacation Box Set!!

I'm guilty. I've got to admit it. I new it wasn't widescreen when I got it. "I couldn't help, it. That sh*t, just be callin' me man. It just be callin' me".

Whenever you get a widescreen TV the problem will be solved, at least in part - just zoom the picture, and you'll see the film in the intended aspect ratio. The experience will be the same as watching a non-anamorphic letterboxed DVD.

Based on the Warner Bros chat here at HTF recently, WB thinks there is absolutely NO interest for 'flat comedies' like Christmas Vacation and other Chevy Chase films to be re-released in widescreen or as special editions.
I think this is a very dumb misconception on their part. Christmas Vacation is one of the top-sellers each Christmas, and has been for the last ten years. I wonder what goes on in their heads.

This is defintely me favorite Christmas movie of all time. I was really hoping that it was available in a widescreen format. I guess I will buy the p&s version as I would like to have it. I wonder if a petition would change their minds?

This movie has become a new 'Christmas Story' or 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' for many families... I just have to watch it every single year. I got the pan&scan version because it's better than VHS. I'd definitely buy it again in widescreen. I'm sure a lot of folks would buy it again if it were re-released as a SPECIAL EDITION.
Can you start petitions in the software forum? If so, we can turn this one into one. If not, perhaps someone would like to start one in the studio feedback forum?
Who knows, come Christmas next year, we'll never have to sit through this film in pan&scan again.

Michael, this film is not Pan and Scan, but is instead full frame. If you want to see the film in it's OAR just fashion some mattes and do your own framing. You will get it in OAR, albeit no benefit from anamorphic enhancement though.

Are you guys sure it's open-matte? I tried zooming the picture on my 16:9 tv...the movie starts out looking nicely framed, but when the doorbell rings and people start entering the house, everyone's heads are chopped off...
    Marc.

Man, this title really is a problem for me! On the one hand, I love this film, and on the other I won't buy an open matte dvd. What do I do?
Maybe if someone else buy's it for me, I won't technically be buying an open matte dvd huh?[IMG]

"Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah!"

Thanks Mike, I needed that. Works better when you have the last line "Hallelujah! Holy Shit! Honey, where's the tylenol?"
