The fun starts when they take their cloaks and daggers off! From Basil Dearden, the acclaimed director of The Captive Heart, The Blue Lamp, Pool of London, The Mind Benders and Woman of Straw, comes the tongue-in-cheek spy caper Masquerade. The British government is in negotiations with the Middle Eastern oil-rich nation of Ramaut to allow in British drilling agencies, but Ramaut withdraws from the talks, leaving Britain desperate. British Colonel Drexel (Jack Hawkins, When Eight Bells Toll) is enlisted in a covert operation to kidnap the Ramaut prince, Jamil (Christopher Witty, The Railway Children), in order to force an oil agreement between the countries. Drexel brings in American David Frazer (Cliff Robertson, Charly) to assist, but Frazer finds someone else has plans for Jamil. Marisa Mell (Danger: Diabolik), Michel Piccoli (Max and the Junkmen), Bill Fraser (Diamonds for Breakfast) and Charles Gray (The Mirror Crack’d) co-star in this rollicking spy spoof. Michael Relph (The Man Who Haunted Himself) and the legendary William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) adapted the screenplay from the novel Castle Minerva by Vincent Canning (Golden Salamander).

Some additional info that Kino's Insider revealed on the other forum about the upcoming W.C. Fields films:
"It's a Gift and The Bank Dick are HD masters done in the 2010s by Universal.

The Old Fashioned Way is 2017 Best Lite master from a 4K scan which will need additional cleanup and color correction by us.

The 2022 titles are not available in HD, so we'll be doing new 2K masters."

Insider: Question about your upcoming release of VIOLENT CITY...

This much we know about the different versions of the film other than the network TV Cut...

1. THE UNCUT INTERNATIONAL Version (104 minutes)—originally dubbed in Italian.
2. THE DOMESTIC US CUT (96 minutes)-the one re-edited by United Artists (the version I originally saw at a drive-in in 1972)—note here—International Co-Productions originally released it early in 1970-71, then after Charles Bronson and Telly Savalas became bigger stars (Bronson, especially)—UA, the studio that brought Bronson his greatest success in the 1970s, took advantage of his star power (as well as the success of Paramount’s THE GODFATHER) by bringing the film in much wider release - this is the version that was called THE FAMILY. I remember this shorter print starting with the then-UA/Transamerica logo.

It was only when it was initially released on DVD that the full version was issued, but because the cut 8 min. were never dubbed, they remain in its Italian language with subtitles.

Will you include both versions, and who owns the film today and where did you license the film from?

I know kino described peter ibbetson and four frightened people the same way:

"Best Lite master from a 4K scan which will need additional cleanup and color correction by us.".

Wouldnt these be considered a new master by everyone except for Kino. I'm curious which is better a universal 4k scan with cleanup and color correction by kino or a new 2k master by kino? A 4k scan would definately bring out more detail over a 2k.

Kino Lorber Insider - is VIOLENT CITY/THE FAMILY public domain, or still under copyright to Unidis? And will you include the UA-edited U.S. version?

The film is not public domain, not sure where you're getting your info from. We will include the Italian cut in Italian and the U.S. cut in English. The extras and any other features will be announced later.

It all depends on the source film elements, 4K scan of poor elements would not even look better than a regular HD scan of the good elements.

Thanks very much! Glad to hear both versions will be included. Will it be under license from MGM (UA distributed the film in the US) or does another entity have the underlying rights? I saw the film years ago on TV with the Paramount logo at the beginning….

I'm certainly thrilled by this announcement of more W.C. Fields on Blu-ray! I know that Kino's Insider has remarked (based on lower sales of their previous Fields releases) that they would only license more if they had HD transfers. Well, they licensed more (before anybody gets too confused, I'm referring to the six just announced), so that should mean these six have HD transfers, which means they should all get released. What is NOT for sure is WHO will release them. If the first three do terribly enough that Kino drops them, then Universal may just release them through their MOD line (like they are with three of the dropped Durbin films).
BUT, before anybody takes too much glee from that, you should consider this: with the Kino releases, we will get the movie with an HD transfer and maybe some extras, all for about $15 full price (at least, if you order from the Kino site directly). IF the last three go to Universal MOD, you will get the same HD transfer that Kino got, and likely NO extras, all for about $20. In short, you would be paying MORE to get LESS (and if you still want more releases, you would HAVE to pay that higher price, as that's what it would take to convince Universal to try anything further). So, if you want more than just the first three (and more than the six total announced here), do yourself (and your wallet) a favor, and buy the Kino releases as soon as possible, and at full price. Otherwise, it will cost you more down the road, especially if you want any more of the remaining W.C. Fields films.

To be fair, I believe those "lower sale" titles were silents, which naturally wouldn't do as well as his talkies.
