Why is this year so important?
Yes, true, the quality of films were pretty poor.
However, there were a lot of fun movies this
year including SHREK, LORD OF THE RINGS and MOULIN ROUGE
that I am hoping garner some nominations.
And I really feel Jason Whyte should be hosting
the Oscars this years. Just standing there in
silence is more talent than Whoopie could ever
bring to the show. :)

Sounds like you're being a little harsh to me. The Oscar's is never going to be an event you watch for the host, surely?
I think Whoopi (no 'e' IIRC) Goldberg was cool in Star Trek and also (flame suit on) Jumping Jack Flash. I guess if I'd ever seen her host the ceremony, it sounds like I might like her better than some of you anyway being a good old socialist (small 's'). :D
All these ceremonies are a pain, though. Like the Brits, Grammies, MTV awards, whatever - it's such a shameless, awful ego-trip that makes you cringe whenever an actor you've seen ripping someone's heart out with their bare hands, or a rock star swearing nineteen to the dozen on a track, comes up to the podium and mouths some mindless platitudes, makes it clear they believe/support something somthing totally anathema to you, and then makes a vomit-inducing speech about how they love everyone.

I'm sure we're going to hear about september 11 through every acceptance speech. My opinion is that I really do not care to hear about the tragedy at this event. Especially from some over-payed talentless actors. Somehow I'm sure they are going make everything about themselves. And Whoopi? Ugh!!

Ms. Goldberg, should she host, will no doubt blame the attacks on George W. Then perhaps Richard Gere will take the stage and explain what the terrorists were trying to "teach" us. Deliver me.

If I had my druthers, there'd be no Oscar telecast at all this year. There'd just be a press release from AMPAS the next morning announcing that The Fellowship of the Ring had swept in all categories (including the ones it wasn't nominated for). But sadly, I rarely have my druthers.

Who do I want to see host the Oscars? 98-year-old Bob Hope.
Now that I would watch.:)

People always laugh at my Kermit The Frog idea, but, really, his time has come. :D
Personally, I didn't mind Whoopi Goldberg all that much last time - I enjoyed her hosting more than Billy Crystal - but, really, there's just nobody better for the job than Steve Martin, and I hope he's just too busy with other projects to take the job this year.
I also shudder to think that they called Goldberg before, say, Emma Thompson.

Hiring Whoopie is the equivelent of saying: "We know you idiots will watch no matter what talentless hack we hire" Hell, they could hire in Carrot Top.

The one and only thing I want to see come of this may happen: The Oscars Ceremony should be INELIGIBLE to win any Emmy awards!! Every year that this gasbag 4 hour pat-on-the-back celebrity rook show wins an emmy award about makes me gag. Talk about over the top celebration. If NFL players did this, they'd get fines.

Me, personally, I'd like to see Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon from "Saturday Night Live" host the Oscars next year (Hey, it's not too early to plan). This year, I would've liked to have seen Eddie Murphy.

Dream host: Johnny Carson. Yes, the man retired from public life when I was ending elementary school, but on my videotape "Oscar's Greatest Moments", Mr. Carson delievers many classic lines. I wish he would come out of retirement and host again.

As for the hosts of recent vintage:

-Whoopi-Decent (no, I don't think she'll blame Bush. She supported several charities post 9-11, and didn't say much. The only ones I know of who were criticizing Bush were Robert Redford and Melanie Griffith)

-Letterman-Mediocre (watching my tape of the '94 ceremony last night, I realized that he was desperate)

-Billy-Blah in recent showings, good back then.

-Steve-Good. I like the guy.

Sincerely,

John "How about no hosts, just presenters?" Kilduff

Whoopie is absolutely talentless!
What? Let's see, I believe she has won an Oscar. What has the "Wild and Crazy Guy" won? Whoopi has had an enormously successful career both in comedy and acting and is well respected by her peers and the public. Why do you think she is asked back to host these awards anyway (because she is rude, boring and not funny)? With this being a very down year at the movies, I hope "A Beautiful Mind" wins many awards.

I don't get what everyone'se beef with Whoopi is? Personally, I thought she was damn funny and much, much better than the Letterman or Martin shows. I'm usually a big fan of Steve Martin but thought he was lame as an Oscar host. As for Letterman, I think he'll go down as the worst host in Oscar history. Crystal was the best but I guess he doesn't want to do it anymore.

Dream host: Johnny Carson. Yes, the man retired from public life when I was ending elementary school, but on my videotape "Oscar's Greatest Moments", Mr. Carson delievers many classic lines. I wish he would come out of retirement and host again.
Johnny was good back in the day but he's too old-school to host the Oscars anymore. His corny style of humor would never play with today's audiences. Leno would be great though.

Also, I'm pretty sure I heard that Whoopi's were some of the best as far as keeping the audience tuned in throughout the entire broadcast.

Coincedence: As I'm typing this, Whoopi is doing a commercial on my TV screen.

This reminds me of a scene from the Critic, where plane is flying over a farm, and a kid asks his dad, "What's that?"

"That's a plane from Hollywood, where they make big budget blockbusters, and award shows where awards shows win awards... get my gun."

Everyone thought Martin was great, so who knows why not except that Crowe will be in the running for a major award again and they might want to cool that fire.

Or maybe Martin just didn't want the stress again.

I like that Drew Carey idea. I think he could handle it well.

I liked Martin. But I don't like it when they personally ridicule or joke about a nominee. He ridiculed Crowe 3 or 4 times that night. So he likes the ladies. What man doesn't? One small joke is fine. But it was carried too far.

Unfortunately the Oscar format is the main problem, and I don't see it changing any time soon. The host is merely there to sprinkle enough one-liners to keep the joe6pack audience from tuning out. Agreed on Whoopi being a terrible host, especially this year. Her humor is too raw and leftist to appeal to today's audience. Her taste is also crap. Remember she approved of Ted Danson appearing in Black face. If they want attitude get Sam Jackson who is smarter and sexier (yes I'm a straight white man who thinks Sam Jackson is sexy)

What would be interesting is if Robert Altman were to orchestrate a 3 hour epic docudramedy of the show. He wouldn't have a problem getting the cast (hell he could probably get the whole damn SAG to participate). Get about a dozen ecletic screenwriters on board to write a quasi Nashville type script and let Altman go hog wild. Sure it could be as bad as Ready to Wear but no less boring then the Oscar telecast itself.
