I usually just think about baseball to eliminate unwanted pop-ups.

Seriously, you can disable Java in your explorer settings.

Disabling Java helps, but you'll also miss a lot of really useful web features. I like Pop-up Killer. It's free and very customizeable, plus there's a very satisfying slamming noise whenever it kills a pop-up window.
