I have heard that DirecTV is getting ready to announce the availability of more HDTV channels, but can't find any more details. Anybody have any more details?

This is terrific and very welcome news. I haven't kept up with DirecTV or any other satellite provider lately because there seemed to be little movement. Now that this is a reality, it is time to switch providers and dive into DirecTV. Even if the output is "small", it is considerably better than nothing at all.

More HD is good, but I wish it was something other than just sports! How about more movie channels or Discovery channel? Does this mean that they will be doing more compressing too?

Compression shouldn't be increased since the HD stuff comes off of the bird at 119 degrees (see the article).
