It's a CBS Paramount release and they will simply box up the same discs as in the individual releases (disc art will probably be the same silver blandness they all get now). So whatever the count was for all 13 years of Bonanza in the separate releases, it will be the same for the box set. The menus will even be the same (Season 1 Part 1, etc.).

Now I do wonder if the tv movies will be included or given a stand alone release like the gunsmoke tv movies. I will admit I watched them lol. Even if michael landon Jr looked like Gary Busey son.

This must be where all the season 12 episodes on youtube come from.. not bad quality either. I nearly bought this because of the wait between seasons, but I don't believe it has any special features

Unfortunately I don't know the answers to either as I was gifted digital copies of both seasons.

BTW, I was wondering.

With a show like Bonanza, that some of us thought would never, ever, be finished, what are the chances of a show like Happy Days getting the same treatment?

I know, I know - music rights and all, but it seems that in the past few years especially, many companies were able to somehow find a way to release some of the "unreleasable" shows completely or almost completely in tact when it comes to their musical score.

Same question goes for a show like Murphy Brown...

Ugh, a guy can dream, right?:laugh:

I wouldn't hold your breath.

That said, wait and see what happens with Cheers on Blu-Ray. If they're fixing past missteps such as with music clearances, that upcoming release will tell us.

Chances are though that just like The Andy Griffith Show on Blu-Ray, they're just utilizing their existing HD transfers and aren't investing in fixing anything (Andy has several episodes in syndicated cut form on DVD, which weren't fixed with the Blu-Ray release).

Another litmus test for other popular but problematic shows under this corporate umbrella is if the remaining seasons (and season 2) of Bonanza have gotten modern transfers from the source elements for these upcoming DVD releases. Season 2 here in North America and the overseas releases of the last few seasons just used the old videotape masters.

If they've made the investment to bring these up to the visual quality of season 1 and seasons 3-11 on DVD, it's a sign that they're investing money and care into this which is the sort of situation that we want to see.

Another sign of such quality is the practical wealth of bonuses on the original volume releases-- practically every episode had something related to it.

50 dollars for season 14 is a stretch l. I imagine that price changes. It was half a season. I may just wait and buy the whole collection when it's available

One possible benefit of buying the complete series release is if they've remastered season 2 to have high quality transfers of the entire series, that probably will be the only way to get that season on disc in remastered form since I can't see them doing a standalone rerelease of it.

The season 12 description on Amazon refers to the contents as having been "restored", so we know at least that season likely isn't recycling the old tape transfers. And I suspect the last two are similarly fresh transfers up to par with what fans have come to expect from this show on DVD.

Possibly bodes well for season 2 having been brought up to the same standards as the remaining 13 seasons, although I don't think anyone would be shocked if it's the same discs as they originally released (Which includes at least one episode that looked like it was sourced from a VHS tape as I recall, with the video/audio quality all over the place for the other episodes).

Kind of like the 10th go (1977-78) of original Jack Lord Five-O, which was iffy in its original separate release on that score, then was corrected for the all-in-one?

I wouldn't hold my breath on them creating brand new S2 masters for the complete series set.

If they didn't correct the mistakes on the Andy Griffith Blu - Ray release, which is a much more lucrative property for them, why would they invest time and a considerable amount of money into remastering S2 of Bonanza when the DVD run of the show had already been halted a number of times due to low sales and whatnot.

I'm just glad that we're finally getting seasons 12 - 14 and we'll all be able to complete our collections.

50 bucks a set is a rather steep price but, thankfully, Prime Day is just around the corner, so if someone isn't willing to fork out a cold 150 on all 3 seasons in May, then there's definitely gonna be a discount on 'em during the big Amazon sales later in the year.

I'm also intrigued as to what extras they will have for the last season. I'm assuming that forever won't be uncut at this stage of the game. Tim Matheson said in a interview that when a film crew came to say goodbye to bonanza on its last day of shooting landon pulled a gag on the audience by having joe get shot by a shotgun and blown away. I hope they have the footage

Also from Bonanza Boomers -- posted by Andy Klyde:

My extreme thanks (and heartfelt gratitude) to those energetic volunteers who worked so hard these past few days to gather information for me. The public relations/marketing/advertising folks at Paramount-CBS Home Entertainment have all the material and will use it to publicize the forthcoming releases. (Some of it made its way to the official press release, above.)

Anticipating a question about re-releasing BONANZA: The Official Second Season . . . like, why? The answer is (besides giving you some extra, not previously-included bonus features) . . . back in 2010, sales for Season 1 were below expectations. So the head honchos decided to try to save money and not restore and remaster the Season 2 episodes from 35mm film, like they did with Season 1. Instead they "tweaked" analog videotape masters created in 1989-90 from film. The results were okay . . . but I knew they could do better.

Work begun on Season 3 the same way (to save costs) but I sent a long letter to the chief head honcho, making the case that Season 3 (and subsequent seasons) should really be restored the right way -- from 35mm film. After some internal discussion, he agreed and rescinded the work order for Season 3, and gave the order to start over with 35mm film sources. He obtained supplemental funding from CBS International, whose division head wisely realized he could make more money offering digitally remastered episodes to interested television networks around the world (and especially in places like Germany, Australia and the U.K.). Ready-made for hi-definition release.

So each episode of every single season has now been digitally remastered and restored from the original camera negatives, and the results are spectacular. I saw the most recently restored Season 2 episodes (completed just last month) and to me, they look even better than the Season 1 and Season 3 seasons restored over a decade ago. (Technology has improved!) And without question, these episodes have never looked better, considering the capabilities of television sets manufactured at the time the shows were first broadcast. The most recently restored Season 12, 13 and 14 episodes literally look like they were filmed yesterday.

So all this has been "a long time coming," but I hope you all agree, it will be "worth the wait."

Best BONANZA wishes,

ANDY KLYDE
