"24", "The Shield" and "CSI". If you like crime drama then these three will go down nicely :)
Never seen "The Prisoner" but I hear its class :)

I don't watch much broadcast television.

Most of what I have watched has been because
of DVD. It was this format that turned me on
to such shows as The X-Files, Futurama and
The Family Guy.

However...

Nothing has come close to a joy-filled rollercoaster
ride than my discovery of 24. That show came
out of nowhere, and from the very first episode I
watched, it became an instant addiction. I gave
up two weeks of my life, dedicating myself
to get through the entire first season. What's
more, I was so addicted, I took the show with me
on vacation, watching it on the airplane and in
my hotel room.

Since then I have recommended the show to all
my co-workers, and those that have bought the
series have thanked me since. All have compared
their viewing experience to a rollercoaster
ride.

Yes, 24 is a highly unrealistic television
series, and because of that I can't blame those who
take pot shots at the characters -- but for pure
originality and entertainment value, you can't do
much better than than this show.

I am just waiting for Fox to release Season Two.
I hear the season is even BETTER than the first.

I notice that there hasn't been much said about Insomniac.
Assuming the we are talking about the Comedy Central show, Insomniac with Dave Attel I can give you some feedback.
The idea is that a camera crew will follow stand-up comedian Dave Attel on his late-nite adventures after his club performances in towns all over North America. While much of the show is devoted to bar-crawling, it is also an interesting look at the people who work and live in the after-hours while all of the rest of the world is sleeping. He tours sewage treatment plants, porn site operators, and does ride alongs with crime scene clean-up, and pest control officers. But don't confuse it with other documentary series!
While you may learn something interesting - or unfortunate - it is not information TV and it is NOT for children. Dave's adventures, while focusing on the crazy - and frequently inebriated - characters he meets, are grounded in "Attleism".
If you are unfamiliar with his stand-up, you can check out the Insomniac page at Comedy Central.com to see if it's for you. I myself find it hard to look away, and highly reccomend that you check out this show! I believe it's presently only available in a couple of Bestof/Uncensored DVDs, but I hope that they will be available in complete seasons someday. There are several episodes that should be seen in their entirity! :D

My choice is definently The Shield. I haven't seen many of the other shows on your list aside from 24, which I didn't like and Dark Angel, which I also thought was kind of lame. The Shield is my favorite show on Tv and is a definite keeper if you like police crime dramas. Like others have said though, it is a graphic show with some potty language and some rather controversial plotlines, including drugs, and homosexuality. If you can handle stuff like that it is a great show. The DVD is pretty good as well in terms of extras with deleted scenes and audio commentaries on the episodes.

Another strong recommendation for The Shield from me. :emoji_thumbsup: Others have already discussed its merits here, so I won't go into details. But the wait for Season 2 to be released is killing me! :D

Well we're on the subject... I've never seen The Prisoner, but everyone seems to hold it in such high esteem. I'm interested in picking it up... however, I don't want to drop the money on the mega-set without knowing if I'll like it, but I don't want to buy one of the smaller sets, because if I do like it then I'll be stuck buying the rest of the series in smaller sets.

Is there any show that you could say, "If you like (x), you'll probably like The Prisoner?" Maybe I'll have seen (x)... ;)

Homicide and The Prisoner, for certain. I also throw my support behind the Sports Night as a write-in candidate.

CSI and 24 can be enjoyable, but I can't give them my full support as they each have glaring weaknesses.

I've never seen the others.

Enjoy.

That's the beauty, I can't think of another series like The Prisoner.
McGoohan resigns his post as a spy for England it seems. He is then kidnapped and taken to 'The Village' and assigned number 6, there are no names in the village, just numbers. Every episode #2 (usually a new face) tries new ways to get #6 to explain why he resigned. Mostly using psychological methods and plenty of experimental drugs. It's #6 against the whole village establishment, and while he wins the battles each episode by never telling why he resigned, he is still a prisoner so he is really losing the war. The analogies can go on forever, not to mention the interpretations.

My thoughts:

Homicide was, as suggested in a prior post, the best drama ever produced on network television. In its day, it was criminally overshadowed by the vastly inferior NYPD Blue.

The Shield is very good, if a bit one-note. It's still developing, and it will be fascinating to see where they take the story which, by first appearances, seems limited in scope (it's not).

The Prisoner is a classic and well worth your time. It's very difficult to describe, but I would highly suggest a sample before purchase, if you can manage it. Otherwise, you might be scratching your head for a good long time.

CSI and 24 are entertaining, but slight in comparison to the shows mentioned above. Worth a purchase? I'm not sure. Both are running strong at the moment so you can see for yourself.

Write-ins: definitely check out Sports Night, Six Feet Under and, of course, The Sopranos. Even when they're bad, they're good.

You can't go wrong with the Homicide set. I got it this morning and I've already watched the first 6 episodes. The last one I watched, Three Men and Adena, is simply mind-blowing. It's no wonder that the writer, Tom Fontana, won an Emmy for that episode and that others have called it the best network hour of dramatic television. That episode wasn't television, that was beyond television.

Sports Night is worthy of your attention as well. I haven't seen any of the other shows.
