Although neither one are for me, good for Warner Bros. for figuring out how to launch a hit on the post-Labor Day weekend two years in a row with The Nun and It. Remember when this weekend used to be left for dead by all the studios?

Warner has been on a tear lately. From BOMojo:

This is the fifth straight weekend Warner Bros. has held the #1 spot at the weekend box office, doing so with three different films (The Meg and Crazy Rich Asians). To that point, this is also the fourth straight weekend WB has held the #1 and #2 spot at the weekend box office, an achievement that hasn't happened in over 25 years.

On a budget of $22 million. Even if it fades fast, it'll be a strong contender for the most profitable movie of the year.
The Conjuring Universe franchise has been a massive moneymaker for WB/New Line. Over five films, the total gross is $1.3 Billion and counting vs. cumulative production spending of about $104 million (most expensive was Conjuring 2 with a budget of $40m).

I watched "Truth or Dare" today. Not a good movie, but it made a serious profit based on budget.

It cost $3.5 million and made almost $95 million worldwide!

So that's a take of about 27 times the budget.

"Nun" would have to make almost $600 million worldwide to get the same "budget multiplier"! :D

Not a great start for The Predator. From BOMojo:

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Not good news for Fox's The Predator, which started its weekend run last night with $2.5 million from Thursday night previews beginning at 7PM. For comparison, Alien: Covenant brought in $4.2 million in previews prior to its $36.1 million opening while Blade: Runner 2049 delivered $4 million in previews ahead of a $32.7 million opening. This is very close to the $2.66 million in previews The Mummy brought in ahead of its $31.68 million debut last summer.

Not surprising to me. The box office projections going into the weekend never seemed to align with the lack of audience enthusiasm every time I saw the trailer in theaters.

It also didn't help matters that Olivia Munn used her press appearances to complain about the fact that a friend of Shane Black's who had been cast in a bit role in a cut scene had turned out to be a convicted sex offender.

I'm also not surprised by the 66 percent drop for "The Nun", given the brutal reviews and so-so word of mouth. Warner Bros. still has to be thrilled with its performance.

The Predator sets the new record for lowest weekend gross for a film premiering on over 4000 screens. Its estimated $24 million weekend was significantly lower than the prior record holder, last year's Tom Cruise remake of The Mummy at $31.6 million.

The Meg
and Hotel Transylvania 3 both crossed $500 million worldwide this weekend. The Meg also passed Ready Player One on the 2018 domestic list.

M:I Fallout also became the top domestic performer in the M:I franchise with over $216 million (over $760 million worldwide).

The Nun is at $229 million worldwide with openings next weekend in Russia, France, Italy, South Korea, and Japan.

Skyscraper also crossed $300 million worldwide.

Weekend preview from Hollywood Reporter:

Venom is expected to top the chart with a domestic debut in the $57 million to $65 million range, an October record (one tracking service even suggests $70 million). Warner Bros.' A Star Is Born could cross $30 million, a stellar start for an adult-skewing movie.

Judging by the size of the crowd and the reception for my noon showing of A Star is Born, I think it's going to outperform expectations -- $40+ million.

Is this the first time the number one (Venom) and number two (A Star is Born) at the box office have the same cinematographer (Matthew Libatique)? And they couldn't be more different!

Deadline says their current estimates are $80m+ for Venom and $43m+ for A Star is Born. Although it's only Saturday, so those could change.

It's interesting that the mostly negative reviews are not preventing it from generating big numbers in opening.

Another question that would be difficult to quantify: how many people who are seeing Venom this weekend think that because Venom is a Spider-Man villain, and Spider-Man is in the MCU, that this is also in the MCU?

Numbers will be higher thanks to both holidays in the US and Canada.

It would be their own ignorant conclusion, since the ONLY Spider-Man film that belongs to the MCU is Homecoming.
Every other SM film over the last 20 years is non-MCU.

Absolutely. But I've already had to explain this to a couple friends, and they can't be the only ones. Also, Homecoming is of course the version that is current. So I get why people would make that assumption, especially if they don't follow the business side of the movie business.

I think Sony is banking on that confusion. And while I'm sure Sony's deal with Marvel Studios prevents that from using the Holland iteration of Spider-Man in their non-MCU movies, it's also in their interest to make sure the Spider-Man property spinoffs don't contradict the MCU movies, to keep that confusion alive.

Rather than burning through characters that Sony has the rights to but we'd all like to see in the MCU at some point, I think I'd rather see Sony do more projects like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, that are completely separate from the MCU and can do things that wouldn't be possible in the MCU.
