Oldtimers here will remember we used to have annual boxoffice threads where we discussed all things boxoffice with very lively debates and discussions. Terry RL was a great contributor but has not been seen around these parts in many a Moon.

So with Ron’s blessing, here for your enjoyment and amusement, is the official 2018 Boxoffice Thread.

It's early, but at the moment, I think "Avengers: Infinity War" is the likely box office champ for 2018 unless something really surprising happens.

Yeah I gotta agree with that one. It’s gonna be a monster.

Yeah... I think it'll sit comfortably in the $200 million opening range that the original Avengers did, I think Avengers: Age Of Ultron came in closer to $190, and based on the star power (not to mention how much more expensive tickets are in 2018 vs 2015), I expect this one will rebound.

Not sure that it'll break Star Wars: The Force Awakens which was something like $248 million. The IMAX numbers should be a smash - it was filmed entirely with the digital IMAX camera (1.90:1 ratio exclusive to IMAX screens) which should boost business for that format. Probably not to the extent that Dunkirk boosted its IMAX business, but it'll be huge.

I think Fantastic Beasts 2 can grow on what the first one did.

I only count six films in the top 25 that weren't sequels, franchise entries, or remakes. And one of those is animated. I've only seen three films in the top 25 and only liked one (WONDER WOMAN). The other two were among the five non-animated, non-franchise, non-remakes/sequels.

Yeah, but there's almost no way that's coming out on the date that it's currently occupying on the schedule.

I think Solo will be the first Star Wars movie to open to good rather than extraordinary business. I think they're overestimating the appeal of that character without Harrison Ford.

Plus, it'll be coming out at a more competitive time than the other recent SW movies. Not just movies but also summer activities.

I really would not be shocked if it gets moved to December, and Disney saves a little face in the move by saying something like, "After the overwhelming success of TFA, R1 and TLJ in December, we are proud to continue the holiday tradition with Han Solo - coming this December."

I won't be surprised either but I think I said it in the Solo thread but the press releases are coming out for the LEGO toys with the May 25 date so I think they still want to make that. Opie's on Twitter talking about seeing The Shape Of Water twice so if he's got time to see movies multiple times, editing must be on schedule.

Wow, I used to see everything and in 2018 I saw just 2 films on the top 25 list this year - Get Out and Dunkirk.

I've seen 9/25, but only two of those in the theater (Fate of the Furious, Kong).
