There are a few free tone generator programs available online, where you just type in the "hz" and it plays it back as either a square wave, sawtooth, pink noise, etc.
This would require you to have your home theater hooked up to your computer's audio output. Always a good thing to have...
I've owned both. I bought the NSP1 set a while back to hopefully upgrade my RCA/Optimus set containing the speakers you mentioned. Here is my take:
RCA-
Pros: Great highs, very spacious sound. Music sounds like real music, rather than music being reproduced by a speaker (you may have to...
RCA receivers are mostly made by Pioneer now, except for the ones bundled with their home-theater-in-a-box systems...
I've had one for almost 3 years without a problem. Sound quality isnt as good as my Sherwood Newcastle R-963, but it is pretty decent :)
I ended up with a Sherwood Newcastle 963, and have NO regrets. Around $1300 if you shop online, but it's little brother, the 863, is within your budget, and has nearly all the same features (slightly lower wattage). Take a look:

I picked up an NSP1 set a while back based on "the hype" as well, hoping it would be the cure-all for my audio addiction.
It wasnt. Should I have expected such a thing out of a $300 set? Nah. I was replacing a dipolar, ribbon-based speaker setup (in hopes of a less-muddy midrange, without...
I'm considering moving to Phoenix soon.
Anyone have any suggestions on a "nice" neighborhood to look for an apartment? I'm hopefully going to be attending ASU at Tempe shortly after I get down there; so proximity to the campus is a plus.
Any input about Phoenix, related to this exact topic or...

This basically amplifies the phono signal so that it can be hooked up through any line-level input. The website says out of stock, but if you write down the part number and take it into a retail store, they should be able to order it for you.
I got mine from Link Removed (just called them on the phone for a better price than their site shows).
I got my 963 for a shade under $1300 shipped. I've never seen them go for less than that. Check out Ebay and Ubid for auctions, but they usually end up closer to $1500.
And I love my...
The upsampling can be easily turned off through the on-screen menu.
For the record, I cannot hear a difference between the two settings, but my CD player is a Playstation (1), and my main speakers cost less than $300, so your mileage my vary.
Just received my R-963! Woohoo!
However, it is *black*, not silver as I've seen in every online picture of it. Anyone know if this is a newer revision, or...?
Once I get it hooked up and play around with it a bit, I'll post a preliminary review :)
I've listened to these extensively.
For the price, they're about as good as you'll get. The bass is more than acceptable for a speaker in this price range, and the overall sound quality is clean. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for some cheap, decent speakers for music...
Should arrive in about 5-7 days, cant wait! I'm upgrading from a $250 3-year old Pioneer (dolby digital, no DTS), think I will notice an improvement in sound quality? :D
There is a definite lack of good information on this receiver in this forum, so I will post a basic review of this unit...
I'm considering picking up one of the new Onkyo 600's when they come out next month; however, I have the opportunity to purchase an Integra 6.2 right now for a very reasonable price. The only difference that I can discern (a center surround channel is not important to me at all) is the DAC for...
Still searching for a good dipole/ribbon based speaker, and I ran across these:
These have got to be the best looking speakers I've ever seen. Anyone heard them? I've been looking at Maggie MMGs, but these might be worth the extra cash!
Thinking about getting some of those wonderful Magnepan MMGs, and I'm pretty sure that my old receiver will not handle them. Here is what I am looking for:
- Great sound quality. My usage is about 70% music, 30% HT.
- Enough wattage to push the power-hungry MMGs (like 87db sensitivity, I...
I just saw the website with the Magnepan MMGs for $550... Anyone heard these? Is the midrange/accuracy going to be satisfactory?
They're a bit more expensive, but a few hundred dollars more would be well worth the investment.
My previous setup:
Optimus PRO-CS5 center channel (Linaeum dipole ribbon tweeter)
2 Optimus LX-5 surrounds (Linaeum dipole ribbon)
2 Optimus LX-10 towers (long-discontinued tower versions of the LX5's, same tweeters)
SVS 20-39PC
This is a quite inexpensive, overall well-performing matchup...
I'm in the market for some very small speakers to serve in a 5-channel setup (preferably going to get all 5 of the same speaker). Since I have an SVS 20-39, I have no real need for big floorstanders, nor will I have the room for them. My setup is used for about 60% music, 40% HT. With the...
Almost all RadioShack or Optimus-brand products are made by one of the large, household-name electronics manufacturers. Thus, buying a RadioShack product is not necessarily buying a "generic" product. Pioneer (or whoever really makes Pioneer-brand receivers) seems to be the manufacturer for...
Are the Toshiba 34x92's (34" Flat-screen direct view) still dirt cheap up there? I thought I remember reading a post that these were like $700-$1000 cheaper in CA than their US counterparts. I might be taking a trip up to Toronto sometime soon, and I might have to pick one up.
