Another add-on to the must-buy list...
------------------
He thought on homeland, the big timber, the air thin and chill all the year long. Tulip poplars so big through the trunk they put you in mind of locomotives set on end. He thought of getting home and building him a cabin on Cold Mountain so high that not a soul but the nighthawks passing across the clouds in autumn could hear his sad cry. Of living a life so quiet he would not need ears. And if Ada would go with him, there might be the hope, so far off in the distance he did not even really see it, that in time his despair might be honed off to a point so fine and thin that it would be nearly the same as vanishing.

I'm curious about something...
I was a little kid when "M*A*S*H" was first released in the theater, but I clearly remember that the film was originally rated X (just like "A Clockwork Orange" and "Midnight Cowboy" were when they were first released).
Are there actually three versions of this film (X, R, PG) or am I just imagining the X-rated version?

Although the big silver border and "Five Star" logo weren't part of the original arwork i believe :)
Also, I think it's worth noting that Altman HATED the tv series...It's kind of funny that they're being released side by side...

To Jeff F.: the original release of M*A*S*H was rated R. Maybe you're thinking of the other Fox films from 1970 that did get an X rating, MYRA BRECKINRIDGE and BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.

Why do I have the feeling that if they submitted the R Rated cut today that it would be rated PG13 anyway? Glad to hear that it's the original film though-looking forward to it!

True! Here's his exact quote on the TV series:
""I don't approve of that [M*A*S*H TV] series. It made a billion dollars, and that's not a misquote or an exaggeration, for 20th Century Fox. It actually saved the studio, for whoever had it then. But to me it was reprehensible. It was not the intention of M*A*S*H [the film] to put an Asian war in our homes every Sunday in which, no matter what platitudes the characters said, the brown-skinned guy was still the enemy. It was the worst commercialism, capitalizing on propaganda. Really, a racist thing. I didn't like the series; I never saw one of those episodes all the way through, anyway."
Here's a great website devoted to M*A*S*H. It has an episode guide, message board and lots of other stuff.

It's a shame that he never saw some of the episodes all the way through, then. It was hardly propoganda or racist. If anything, they pounded on and preached to the viewers week in and out that war and racism were BAD things. It was good that they tempered this very important message with all the comedy, so as to tone down the preaching and slip in in to the audience, instead of driving them away.
I really can't beleive that he and I are discussing the same TV series!

As Peter stated, we got a chance to see an example of the restoration job on M*A*S*H at Fox this afternoon and all I can say is, "WOW!"
eek.gif

We saw the opening title sequence ("Suicide is Painless") in 35mm and the "Hot Lips in the shower" scene from the DVD and they looked gorgeous! Far and away the best I've ever seen this great film (perhaps including the original theatrical run in 1970).
If you're the least bit unsure, take my advice: buy this disc!!

I agree. I'm a big Altman fan but I disagree with him on the TV series. I think the movie was far superior to the series, however I still think the first 3 seasons are some of the best half-hour TV comedy out there.

I don't totally agree with Altman either, but I do see his point. I went to a lecture by Altman in the late-80's and he didn't even know then that the show had gone off the air back in '83! But he did say something at this lecture that rang true to me: He said, "We did MASH for artistic reasons, but the show is made for strictly commercial reasons."
He was right about that, but it is still one of the best tv shows of all time. I have problems with some choices made in the series, especially in the last few seasons, but it still beat anything else on commercial tv at the time.
I am dying to see the restored Altman film, as well as all the extra stuff!

Any word on what the "Story of M*A*S*H" or "M*A*S*H Reunion" bits are like?
I saw the AMC program about it a couple of months ago, and I didn't think it was very good. The music and narration was way too commercial and didn't work for me.
