So the digital version is getting more extras that are not on the disc version.

Sigh.

That's why it's not just a "digital copy" any more, it's: Dune: Part Two Premium Digital Ownership

Is the "Premium Digital Ownership" the same thing you get with the disc's digital code?

Premium Digital Ownership is the name for the period when it goes onsale digitally weeks or months before the physical release. That’s when it’s priced at $30 for a purchase and $25 for a rental. When the physical media version comes out, then it usually drops to a $20 purchase and a $6 rental.

The code that redeems with the disc will provide access to the exact same feature and content.

So the digital version is getting more extras that are not on the disc version.

Sigh.

Each disc comes with a digital code which provides access to the digital copy of the movie which includes all of those same features, so while they might not all live on the disc, they are included as part of the digital access that comes with the discs.

This has been industry standard for many releases for over a decade, nothing new here.

Thrilled at what I know will be a stellar presentation of the movie on disc, but annoyed that disc buyers are getting short-changed.

How are disc buyers being short changed? They are being given access to the same digital bonus extras as people who only purchase digitally.

How are disc buyers being short changed?
The disc itself is being short-changed because not all of the extras are available on it. Yes, disc buyers can access it digitally with the code. But in principle, the full slate of extras should be provided in a permanent archival fashion on the disc. We have no guarantee that the digital-exclusive extras will remain there in perpetuity. And I actually have lost digital extras that were not included on the physical disc before. Rarely, but it can happen.

This is nowhere near the first time this has been done, nor will it be the last. That's just what happens now, unfortunately. I'm not surprised in the least by this development either. But as a physical media enthusiast, it's still annoying.

Similarly, I'm not sure why anyone is surprised regarding the aspect ratio. Denis Villeneuve has released multiple films with IMAX aspect ratio scenes before, including Dune Part One, and has always chosen for them to be a consistent scope aspect ratio at home. I can understand why people might wish that he would make a different choice. and be disappointed, just as I'm disappointed about the extras. Wanting to have the IMAX ratio is perfectly valid. But this has been Villeneuve's consistent preference for his films in the home. So of course that is what it is. Villeneuve is being consistent in this regard.

I read somewhere that Villeneuve wants to preserve the IMAX ratio presentation for theatrical.

The odd thing about the timing of the home release is that the film is still going strong on IMAX screens, with a re-release coming up!

It will have been 47 days between Thursday, February 29 when the film opened and Tuesday, April 16 when the digital release comes out. I don't think they necessarily need to go that fast, but it does seem to be about standard these days.

In any case, WB does not seem to believe that releasing it at home right now will ding the box office to a significant enough degree that they want to delay. The IMAX run, in particular, offers something you literally can't get at home, so those screens should be affected less by home availability than a standard multiplex. And the movie still got a theatrical exclusive window which was denied to the original.

Which extras?
Off the top of my head, Target sold an exclusive edition of Inside Out with additional digital bonus features beyond what was available elsewhere when it first came out. These were part of the digital copy code for it. But eventually they went away.

Here in Canada, we MIGHT get a digital copy... and that will likely be on GoogleTV (aka YouTube) with no extras.

Based on the ad copy I've seen so far, we're getting no digital copies with our discs this go around.

So we will miss out on the majority of extras.

I'm taking a wait-and-see position until these are out. I wouldn't put it past the studios at some point to release just a bare-bones version of the film as the included "digital copy" and a different "premium digital ownership" version with all the extra extras requiring a double-dip purchase.

Similar to the old days when everyone bought the regular release disc, then six months later were asked to double-dip for the super-duper deluxe edition.

Here is an unfortunate rarity. The standard definition DVD has much better artwork than the UHD or Blu-ray head salad counterparts. This is what those editions should have used too.
