Warner released 2 versions: One in 1999, and the other last year. Are both versions the same? I noticed both were in 1:33.1  . Is there any chance of a widescreen release in the future, or did Kubrick only want the film to be seen in that ratio?

Kubrick shot The Shining open matte. He prefered it to be seen in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio.
The DVD to get is the remastered version that came out last year. I just got it and . The transfer is crystal clear. I do not exaggerate in saying that it looks better than most new films.
If you want to get it really cheap (3.99 for shipping), go to DVDTalk's DVDClubs fourm. Look through the second thread (NEWCOMERS - READ THIS) for the TV Greats Club FAQ thread.
