I'd like to know whether Sony camcorders' 16:9 mode will actually yield higher resolution when viewed on 16:9 TV.

I personally don't think so because either recording in 4:3 or 16:9, the total number or horizontal lines will be exactly the same.

Any input/comment?

I too am interested in how this works.

My 5 year old Sony Hi-8 camcorder has a label on the bottom saying that it has technology licensed from Faroudja.

That has always peaked my curiosity. When I record in WS mode, and play it back on a 4:3 set with the camera set as though I have a 16:9 TV, it looks just like an anamorphic DVD, a 4:3 image, but horizontally squashed.

What that equates to in lines of resolution, I don't know, but it sis definitely not just a 4:3 letterbox deal, like a non-anamorphic disc.

I think I read that the Sony DVD 300 model does have an HD record mode somehow..... But even what I read was way vaugue on what that actually meant.
