today I used a friend's pendrive for some transfer work. I am sure my system is free of virus, so does his computer. All of a sudden, i discovered numerous drives. previously I had just C,D,E, F, G and H. But now I could find multiple unknown drives. any idea how has this occured? And how to get rid of this?

Is the USB drive still inserted when you see this? If so, your friend may have installed a virtual optical drive program on the USB drive that your computer is reading.

no i took this screenshot after removing the drive. i have restrtedmy system some 3-4 times. and the problem isn't resolved yet. Administrative tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk management shows just the 5 drives I had been using before this incident. Can't disable the drives from here. still beyond my reach of repair..

Go into device manager, uninstall the optical drive (remove drivers if it asks), then reboot.
