SpenceJT,
What "audio mode" did you have your friends switch to? Are you talking about DTS as opposed to the DD-5.1 "Dropout" track? Per your quote:
"Friends of mine having a 797 had the problem. I told them to switch audio modes, and it played fine.
Perhaps something is a bit too tight within the tolerances between the receiver's decoders and the DVD as this seems to be a relatively recent discovery (possibly starting with Pearl Harbor). I hope like heck that it isn't some new level of MacroVision, or some other encryption! This would tick off a great deal of Onkyo owners!"
Is Pearl Harbor a Universal release? I didn't look too close to see who released that one. Also, I noticed there is a thread posted here in "HOME THEATER SOFTWARE", titled;
"DVD Players will not be able to play future Universal Audio CDs!". This discussion is right in line with what you brought up about encryption.
If this is the case, it's going to tick off the whole industry, not just Onkyo owners. I for one am already pissed with just the thought of it being so! How can they release an encryption code on a disk that is rendered useless when it is a legitimate purchase? A factory pressed disc should play in any hardware. Encryption should take over when somebody tries to make an illegal copy onto a blank disc, not on the actual pressing that people are bringing home and paying for...
That's quite a dipshit approach. See, I told you I was pissed!!!
By the way, day number 2 and still no response to my inquiry regarding this subject from UNIVERSAL STUDIOS.

Hal,

Did you try the DD-5.1 soundtrack, or just DTS through your Yamaha? If not, could you try it and let us know how your Yamaha handles the DD-5.1?? Thanks!

It's just me again!

I've been doing some more research on other forums. I find that the problem with the DD-5.1 soundtrack is predominently with the Onkyos. There is something in the decoder chip set that Onkyo uses, that doesn't like the EX flag, or their new encryption software on these new disc releases. I don't know which of the two it is. Bringing as much as we can to Onkyo's and Universal's attention hopefully will get their specialists to figure it out.

Onkyo tech support is the next stop...

I hope you won't mind if I introduce a new, similar problem, but I don't think I should start a new thread for this.

I've got a Sony DVP-S560D running straight into a Sony Vega (no home theater yet) and I get volume drops with this disc (the DD track, naturally). At first, I was scared the problem was with my TV, but the fact that I haven't had problems before and that these problems are occurring in the same spot leads me to believe it's disc related.

Anyway, as I said, I'm getting volume drops to the point where I just shut the movie off at the plane crash scene. The first instance is at the first major line of dialog, where the guy on the boat is hooking the kid in and says something like, "Here, let me hook you in." Between "Here" and "let," the volume drops noticeably. It picks back up soon thereafter, but, again, it happens throughout.

So, do I have a bum disc? Or, could my player be having a problem with these EX flags you're mentioning, too? I'm rather ignorant about these technical issues.

I'll try to take the disc over to my mother's DVD player tomorrow and see if I still get the volume drops.

Greg,

Thanks for posting your problem/find on the Sony too. This is the type of stuff we need to see so that this problem doesn't indicate that it applies to only one type of hardware such as the Onkyo or Denon or Yamaha etc...

The problem is most likely NOT your disc. It's the flag problem in DD-5.1, as I have been stating all along. The discs need to be re-done by UNIVERSAL or whatever they're going to do. More people have to let them know they screwed up!!

Alex,

I tried it on an older Pioneer, and it worked fine. So, it's not the disc, just as you suspected.

Gary,

If it's not too much trouble, could you run the start of the movie in DD and see how things are on your machine? Like I said in my previous post, the most noticeable drop is right when the people are being hooked in.

I was going to post earlier that JP2 also had a DTS track problem, but didn't - then I got this e-mail today.
We have just been notified by Universal Studios that there may be a playback problem with the JURASSIC PARK 3 in certain makes of DVD players.
Universal has said that this is not a problem with the disc, but rather a problem with the hardware located in the following makes of DVD players:
Onkyo, Kenwood and Denon. The problem is a faulty DTS decoder chip that causes the disc to mute in certain places when the Dolby DTS 6.1 isolated track is selected from the main menu. JURASSIC PARK 3 is the first disc to show this defect, but there will most likely be others down the road.
Dolby has notified the manufacturers of the particular machines listed above and they will be repairing them for the future. You may want to check your warranty and send your machine back to have it repaired.
Sincerely,
Information
Customer Service

That should clear up any questions, but I'll apologize now if this has been posted elsewhere.
