Here’s a wonderful Ozzie and Harriet episode with a focus on Harriet Nelson. It’s got a bit of everything including lots of pretty models. That of course is the key to any real good O&H episode! Originally presented as a Birthday Tribute to Harriet Nelson.

This one is for you Harriet. Ozzie got most of the fanfare, but you were just great!!

Our story opens with Ozzie getting a haircut. He mentions to his barber that Harriet is at her Women’s Club to hear a lecture about hairstyles by “Monsieur” Charles (Maurice Marsac).

Ozzie: Well you know those guys have a tough job, women like to change their hairstyles, get new personalities every year or so, sort of like the automobiles coming out with new models. I was looking at some pictures in a magazine the other day, hairstyle show, some of those hairdo’s were really crazy. Well, my wife’s hair always looks real nice though, it’s conservative, always looks good, but nothing crazy or mad. I think that Mrs. Eisenhower has the right idea. She wears her hair pretty near the same all the time those bangs, very becoming on her. The President likes it and she likes it so she stays with it. Personally I think that makes a lot of sense. I outta be the barber I’m doing all the talking.

On his way to the Women’s Club, Ozzie takes a stroll by Miller’s Drug Store and Kelley’s Joke Shop.

Excited by what he's seeing, Ozzie wants to gets closer, and he moves right up to the first row.

Harriet: There’s a chair up there on the stage dear.
Ozzie: I’ve been looking all over for you dear.
Harriet: Well here I am.

When the show ends, Charles asks the audience if anyone has any questions.

Audience Woman: What good does it do to change your hairstyle if your husband never notices it?
Charles: Why I think you’re mistaken ladies I’m sure you underestimate the male powers of observation.
Audience Woman: I bet if I ask my husband to describe my hairstyle he couldn’t do it and I doubt if any of these other ladies husbands could either.
Charles: I must take issue with you.

Charles calls on Ozzie for help.

Describing Harriet’s Hairdo

Convinced, Harriet makes an appointment with “Monsieur” Charles for her new hairstyle. Later that night all the talk about her new hairdo proves to be such a great concern for Ozzie that he experiences a nightmare.

Though early in the day, still concerned, Ozzie goes to throw a few down, a double in fact, that is, a double scoop Ice Cream Soda where Joe the Soda Clerk (Barney Phillips) consoles him.

The boys are off to a costume party (told you this one had everything). David Nelson is dressed as Yul Brynner's King Mongkut of Siam “et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!” from The King and I (1955), and Rick Nelson does a hysterical impersonation of Elvis Presley!

Connie Harper was in 13 Season 14 episodes. 12 as Miss Edwards and 1, S14E26, as 'Billiard Girl'.

It is funny that they brought in Barbara Stuart, if Connie Harper was not available. They could easily have just re-written the scene with just Dave and Rick.
Thanks for the information. I thought she had to be in some Season 14 ones, but couldn't remember. It doesn't make sense they had some other secretary in that one episode instead of her.

Harriet did the polka king Frankie Yankovic proud and so did Elvis, too!

With the incredible release of The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet now totally completed ( at least on DVD), does anyone think we will see any similar releases from MPI in the future?
Classic Television has always been their bread and butter, so I’m hoping they will look into something similar with a show like People’s Choice, or Love That Bob.
At least, I’d like to think so!

I hope so, but the stars will definitely have to align in the right way and we’ll probably need some luck on top of that.

It’s not often that there’s a fourteen-season series in the public domain with original film elements available that were already in the process of being preserved by a major non-profit institution.

Hopefully the sales numbers were good for O&H.

I wish they would acquire Seasons 6-8 of The Donna Reed Show and the remaining seasons of Petticoat Junction. There has to be some way to work around any legal or music issues.

So here’s a mystery involving a 1957 season 5 episode. David Has A Date With Miss Universe is a flashback/rebroadcast episode. Toward the end of the episode, David takes Miss Morris , Miss Universe to a restaurant. Playing in the background is Moon River a song that didn’t exist until a couple of years later. Was that song dubbed in when the flashback episode aired during the early sixties ? Or was it dubbed in more recently when Sam remastered the series and why? It seems to me that most of the background music for the show was either library music or written specifically for the show. So why that substitution?

I don't know the answer to your music question, Lou, sorry...but I remember being annoyed when viewing "A Date with Miss Universe" that it was the syndicated version, as the actual episode story was really hacked up to make room for not just one, but two song performances by Rick. Seems like Ozzie cut out the entire ending/wrap-up of the original episode. Glad it exists in any form, but most of the other syndicated versions of earlier episodes that I've seen aren't as egregious as this.

I looked at a 2017 download of the Miss Universe episode. It was the rerun version and the Moon River tune was there.

It could of been added to the rerun version in the 60s. But it could also have been original to 1957. The tune might have been around but didn't become a hit until they shopped it around again in 1961.

I can hear the Christmas tune "Sleigh Ride" in the 1939 Roy Rogers movie "Frontier Pony Express". The internet says that "Sleigh Ride" was written in 1948. "Sleigh Ride" can be heard at the 20 minute mark, in the movie, if you want to take a listen at YouTube.

Re: "Moon RIver": It won Best Song at the Oscars for 1961 films. The songs that are nominated are supposed to be original and written for the film in question. It wouldn't have been eligible had it been written or used previously.

Kander and Ebb had written a song titled "Maybe This Time" that they'd never used it for anything before. They call it a "trunk song" -- written, not used, stored away in trunk. Even though it hadn't been used anywhere before they pulled it out and used it in the film version of Cabaret. In an interview, one of those two says they should've kept their mouths shut about that and the song might've been nominated for an Oscar. Would it have won? Maybe; Cabaret was extremely successful. The song that won that year was "The Morning After" from The Poseidon Adventure.

On the other hand, the great song "Baby, It's Cold Outside," from 1949's Neptune's Daughter, WON an Oscar. Many at the time wondered how it could have been nominated because many around Hollywood recalled Frank Loesser and his wife performing it at parties around town. His daughter even confirmed it not long ago when people started talking about the song in ways which were never intended and she said it had been written in 1944! Perhaps back then the rules weren't so strick and it just didn't need to have been used professionally before. I don't know. By the way, in the movie, Fernando Llamas and Esther Williams sing the song as it is traditionally sung, but what most people don't know is that after that, the traditional parts are reversed and Betty Garrett sings the male part to Red Skelton who is trying to go, to great comedic effect. When Glee was on television, in one of the Christmas episodes, the two gay characters, played by Chris Colfer and Darren Kriss sang it together.

Moon River was written for 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and was not around in 1957, so it had to be added when the episode was edited to squeeze in Ricky's segments. Meanwhile, this appears to be a scene that got removed to make room for Rick, which is kind of a shame:

Love this! Thanks for posting. I never knew this was cut from that episode and not on the DVD set. What a shame. Why would this have been cut? Makes no sense to me. Just on another note, I am continuing with the Season 14 episodes. On the Secret Passage episode, I noticed Constance Harper as Miss Edwards was given credit, but I don't remember seeing her. She did appear in the next episode Wally The Author. I really enjoyed A Message From Kris which ended with Rick singing one of his beautiful ballads, "Say You Love Me", which was in the movie "Love and Kisses". Anyone noticed sometimes Kris has longer hair and other episodes she has shorter hair. She looked terrific with both. Last night, I watched "The Mummy's Tomb" with her mother Elyse Knox in her first major film part. You can tell how Kris got her really good looks, both were very attractive.

Nice scene! David didn’t have a bad voice! It makes you wonder- why couldn’t the scene be restored and kept along Rick’s songs. It’s not like in 2023 they were trying to fit the show into a half hour slot.

Thanks for sharing that video, Mark! A cute scene. I think there must also be a few more minutes of dialogue to close out the story that were also cut from this episode, as the main story - of David not getting to spend any time alone with the beautiful Carol Morris (who was actually crowned Miss Universe in 1956) as she's forced to fly off to another engagement - comes to an unusually abrupt ending in the repeat version that's included on the S5 DVD. No offense to Rick and his song performances, but I'd rather have the original version of this episode intact.

I'm enjoying the series for the first time, and I'm probably laughing at it for all the wrong reasons. The show has a bizarre feeling to it, as though it's something from some alternate universe. That's the only way I can explain it.
