I had assumed this still of June Blair was from one of her TV western guest shots. But the clue to which show the still is from is on the sign in the background, "Dr. Ben January". That's a character on "Two Faces West", a syndicated 1960-61 western series in which June Blair had a recurring role.

Francis DeSales, who played 'Mr. Dobson', Dave's boss, on O&H, was also a regular on "Two Faces West".

Bob Gu, thanks for the very interesting Ozzie and Harriet related stuff, and great pics too!

I'm in the habit of browsing my old hometown's daily newspaper microfilms on Google Newspaper Archive...seeing on our local weather a few days ago that our record low temperature was in 1956, I browsed my hometown Calgary Herald (5 cents a copy, 10 cents on Friday and Saturday with magazine and color funnies!) for Sept. 6th, 1956...kids going back to school of course, in one of the first Polio-free school years thanks to Dr. Jonas Salk (my elder brothers, but I was only 8 months old)...in international news...in the Middle East, the ongoing Suez Crisis (Britain and France invaded Egypt while keeping President Eisenhower in the dark!), and growing tensions elsewhere with the Soviet Union, who were about to invade their subjugated client state Hungary within weeks, with what amounted to a civil war and refugee crisis resulting across the Iron Curtain...all this in a year where President Eisenhower (a hero in my book), had two heart attacks (!), faced down a Civil Rights crisis in desegregating Tennessee and Missouri schools, ordering in the National Guard (Little Rock Arkansas crisis coming in 1957, where he had to mobilize the 87th Airborne!) and Eisenhower also had to campaign for re-election in November 1956 against Adlai Stevenson...all while keeping the U-2 spy plane secret (first flown over Moscow on July 4th 1956!), attending secret National Security briefings where Nuclear War plans that projected 60 million to 400 million dead were presented (leaving a shocked Eisenhower shaken to his moral core and saying "aren't we better than cave men?")...and dealing with two epic Cold War conflicts at the same time!

But, I took these screen caps from Sept. 6, 1956...a delightful advertisement from our then-one and only TV station (on the air since the fall of 1954 for a city of approx. 220,000 at the time, our second TV station coming in 1960)...the CHCT-TV channel two season premiere of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, then going into it's fifth season...Ozzie and Harriet at 8:30 Friday evening, with The Millionaire preceding and Fury following...Roy Rogers Show and Howdy Doody in the after school hour and before supper...
Ozzie and Harriet 61 Calgary Herald Sept. 6, 1956.JPG

From the same day's edition...ads for some of the television sets we were proud to own...Blackburns Hardware were a much-loved chain of four Hardware stores in my hometown...you could get a new 1956 TV set for as little as $7 per month! In the early to mid 1960s as a little kid, I browsed their huge plastic and balsa model kits and toy department (they sold everything!)...and I purchased what I could afford of Revell, Monogram, Airfix and Aurora model kits with my meagre funds...but most days I just gawked without buying anything...but not once did those great old WW2 veterans who owned the place ever give me the bum's rush out of their incredibly packed store...what a great store, and what a great bunch of hard-working old gentlemen they were!

Ozzie and Harriet 65 Calgary Herald Sept. 6, 1956.JPG

If you wanted to go to the movies instead...these were some of the films showing that same day of Sept. 6th, 1956...Moby Dick, The Searchers, High Society, Love Me or Leave Me, Doctor in the House, The Ambassador's Daughter, The Vagabond King, Let's Make Up, Two Gun Lady, Barefoot Battalion, An Alligator Named Daisy, Treasure of the Golden Condor, Massacre Canyon etc., news about an upcoming Jock Mahoney Western and Van Johnson interview, Hedda Hopper's Hollywood and news about Susan Hayward's recent divorce...ads from the prestige Cinema Palaces and double-bill dumps of my youth!

On the MPI/Sam Nelson release they used a rerun print for S2E15, "The Miracle", with a new then present-day Ozzie and Harriet introduction, replacing the original opening.

This YouTube video looks like the original opening. There are other uploads, of this episode, with the edited version without the new intro or the old one. These versions also have different Nelson cast openings with different clips of 'Thorny.

S2E15, "The Miracle" with original opening but no end credits.

On the subject of episodes that are re-broadcasts, on the DVD's of seasons 1-12, there appear to be a total of about 12 episodes that are re-broadcast versions. The episode Road Race from season 6 is not indicated as a re-broadcast version on the DVD set but I believe it is a re-broadcast.

David Oswald Nelson (October 24, 1936 – January 11, 2011) was an American actor. He was the older brother of musician Ricky Nelson. Along with his brother and their parents, Nelson appeared on the long-running sitcom The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet in the 1950s and 1960s. Late in the run of the series, David directed several episodes. After the series' end, he continued acting, directing and producing. His most memorable break-out role was in the 1959 thriller The Big Circus, wherein he played a troubled youth. Nelson's last film appearance was in the 1990 film Cry-Baby. For his contributions to the motion picture industry, Nelson was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1501 Vine Street on May 9, 1996… Continue @ Wikipedia

Somewhat ironic is that today, David Nelson’s Birthday, falls shortly after the historic release of MPI’s The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet on DVD comes to a close.

David The Sleuth (1954) is the Seventh Episode from the Eighth Season of The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet and not only does it serve as a focus on David Nelson, but it’s a tribute to the classic Detective & Cop shows of the 1950’s. The entire episode features a unique music track not heard on other Ozzie & Harriet shows. Six years later the music track became the theme song for the Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse (1960-1962) animated series. Variations of that music theme can be heard throughout the episode and in the video clips. At the end of this tribute I’ve posted the theme segment from David The Sleuth followed by the version from Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse including additional information about it from Wikipedia.

Very attractive Dorothy (Joyce Taylor) stops by to borrow a few records for her Saturday night party. David explains he can’t attend because he has an exam on Monday and has to work on Saturday. Rick tries to build David up by saying he’s doing a lot of important investigative work at the law office of DOBSON & KELLY.

There he first stops to talk with telephone operator “Charlie” (Beverly Scott) who is doing a neat Mary Tyler Moore Richard Diamond parody.

Kiss Me

Then he sees his boss, Mr. Dobson with a client named George (John Hubbard) who’s arm is in a sling. Mr. Dobson wonders aloud, “How bad that arm really is, he could be bluffing.”

David meets Ricky at the bowling alley and sees George in perfectly good health without a sling, bowling just fine. He calls the office and Miss Edwards (Connie Harper) suggests he gets a camera and takes some pictures as evidence. David, not the sharpest sleuth on the block had to hear that from his secretary first.

The Sleuth

Eager to both help and impress his boss, lawyer in training David Nelson decides to become “David The Sleuth”. Along with brother Ricky, they begin to follow George and his whereabouts inorder to prove he’s a big faker. While at the alley, Ricky notices he’s just “discovered the perfect way to bowl”, by looking at George in the next lane.

By the time David returns to the alley with a camera George is gone. Then David and Ricky notice Barbara (Barbara Eiler), the girl bowling with George, is still at the alley, so they decide to follow her until she meets him for dinner later that evening.

Barbara evades the boys so they hail cab driver (Hal Smith) to follow her.

First it’s off to a Gift Shop, but then they lose her at a Furniture Shop.

Not being sure where to go next the boys mention to Harriet that George smokes cigars and needs a haircut, so she suggests they begin searching for George at all the local Barber Shops.

The search is on. There’s a man smoking a cigar but it’s the wrong man.

The next Barber Shop turns out to be a front for a gambling ring, which our two sleuths, who look mighty suspicious, break up. Note the great music track in the clip below.

Episode Notes:

1. David Nelson pulls up to his bosses house in a Black 1957 Porsche Speedster. A classic! Several of the young male TV stars drove one, including Steve McQueen.

2. When a friend comes over to borrow record albums, David carries them out to her car for her. The album on top of the stack is "Latin Dance Party", a 1959 release by Rodriguez and His Orchestra (Golden Tone C4016).

Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse theme in David The Sleuth (Nov.18.1954)

Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse Opening (1960) Re-edited

The memorable theme music by Johnny Holiday features a walking bass line and is fashioned after the theme for Peter Gunn. It has most notably been performed in concert by the New York Dolls and their version of the "Courageous Cat Theme" featured on their album Rock'n Roll (1994). The theme was also featured in "Thousand Dollar Bill", a 1959 episode of the Mike Connors detective series Tightrope!. It also appears in "The Jackson Greene Story", a 1959 episode of The Millionaire (TV series). From Wikipedia

Nick works undercover on a bank robbery. After the thieves are apprehended, the $100,000 they stole is nowhere to be found, and the police lieutenant who apprehended them is accused of taking the money. Now Nick works to prove the lieutenant innocent.

Thank you David Nelson for all the entertainment you gave us.
Happy Birthday, In Memory.

Merry Christmas begins with this warm and tender Ozzie and Harriet Holiday adventure. Rick and David make preparations for a fraternity Christmas Party but they want something different. This calls for a fraternity meeting. In keeping with the holiday spirit and instead of having the usual dance David suggests singing Christmas Carols. “Gather around the piano, put your arm around your girl”. The “ayes” have it but there’s one problem. They don’t have a piano! The Chairman of the committee, Wally, suggests that David and Ricky investigate. The “ayes” have it.

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet S09E13 Piano for the Fraternity (Dec.21.1960)-12.jpg

A piano for rent proves to be too expensive - - $10 bucks for the piano and $15 bucks each way hauling charge! That’s $40 bucks, $30 bucks more than all of them have put together and more than they were going to spend for the entire party says Wally. These boys don’t exactly come from money! David tells the salesman they’re going to need to think it over a little.

The boys David ponder where they’re going to get a piano. Harriet finds an ad for a $40 used piano and suggests that the boys check it out. Wally says they only have $25 dollars and 12¢ in the Fraternity treasury!

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet S09E13 Piano for the Fraternity (Dec.21.1960)-30.jpg

It’s off to the Stevens’ to see the used piano. Rick tries it out. “Pretty hot”, says Mrs. Stevens. “I think it’s called pretty cool nowadays mother” says Mr. Stevens. The boys get to know the old couple and because they’re such nice people Rick doesn’t feel it’s right to try to negotiate a better price. They boys explain their financial plight and tell the Stevens they need a few moments to talk it over. The Stevens tell the boys that the piano has been in their family for a long time and they’ve decided not to sell it. Says Charles in the true spirit of Christmas, “Yeah we figured it just wouldn’t be right to sell it to you boys so we’re going to give it to you.” The boys are speechless as The First Noel Christmas Carol can be heard playing in the background.

Bless their hearts! While putting up the Christmas lights the boys find lots of family heirlooms left in the Stevens’ piano including a family photo album and a folder full of Christmas Carols.

The Annual Christmas Party commences. Everyone seems concerned the Stevens won’t be coming. Wally announces it might be fun to sing some Christmas Carols but Rick discovers that Mrs. Stevens gave them the wrong folder. Suddenly the Stevens' show up at the party with the missing Carols. Rick gets everyone to make them stay and volunteers that Charles plays his piano. It begins with rousing renditions of “Deck The Halls” and “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”.

I'm not a huge fan of Ricky's musical career (basically not a style I gravitate to) - but he was a very good musician and had a good voice. I have several of his single releases in my collection for that reason. And I'm somewhat remiss in that I've *never* heard, at least that I'm aware of, a single song with Ozzie's band and Harriet singing in spite of liking Big Band material.

Tonight I experienced Tutti-Frutti Ice Cream for the very first time and the only thing I’m sorry about was that I didn’t have a quart of Tutti-Fruitti Ice Cream by my side. Bless Sam Nelson and MPI for giving us this wonderful series and this wonderful family to enjoy.

Goody Goody
by
Johnny Mercer

Good thing, got yourself a good thing
It's a good thing
It's a good thing, got yourself a good thing
I won't let you go
So you met someone
Who set you back on your heels
Goody goody
So you met someone
And now you know how it feels
Goody goody
So you gave him your heart too
Just as I gave mine to you
And he broke it in little pieces
Now how do you do?
So you lie awake
Just singin' the blues all night
Goody goody
So you think that love's
A barrel of dynamite
Hooray and Hallelujah
You had it comin' to ya
Goody goody for him
Goody goody for me
And I hope you're satisfied
You rascal you
Good thing, got yourself a good thing
It's a good thing, got yourself a good thing
I won't let you go
So you met someone
Who set you back on your heels
Goody goody
So you met somebody
And now you know how it feels
Goody goody
So you gave him your heart too
Just as I gave mine to you
And he stuck it in his collection

So you lie awake
Just singin' the blues all night
So you think that
Love's a barrel of dynamite
Hooray and Hallelujah
You had it comin' to ya
Goody goody for him
Goody goody for me
And I hope you're satisfied
You rascal you

I’ve been slowly working my way through the series savoring each weekly allotment of two Sunday afternoon episodes. Just great to watch the show evolve while it stays virtually the same! Getting near the end of season five.
Also great to see Ricky begin to become a rock and roller.
As I’ve mentioned before, even though I own all 14 seasons plus the bigger Time Life set, I’d still go for a Blu-ray set particularly if it were packaged as nicely as the Complete DVD set.
I wonder if there’s any chance for a release of the fifties feature film and/or Love And Kisses, possibly as a Blu-ray set?

I've been wondering about "Here Come The Nelsons" and "Love And Kisses" for quite some time too. Would Sam Nelson have any pull in possibly getting those out? They would certainly be ones for Kino to look into if another Universal deal gets officially done this year. I am into the final season of O&H. The color episodes look absolutely fantastic! Sam has done a wonderful job of restoring these. I watched the 4th episode of Season 14 "Helpful June" last night. I noticed Miss Edwards ( Constance Harper) wasn't in this. There was another secretary with no name given played by Barbara Stuart. I don't recall if Miss Edwards made any appearances in Season 14. So far after viewing a few from the last season, I haven't seen her. Anyone have any idea? Just wondering.

Connie Harper was in 13 Season 14 episodes. 12 as Miss Edwards and 1, S14E26, as 'Billiard Girl'.

It is funny that they brought in Barbara Stuart, if Connie Harper was not available. They could easily have just re-written the scene with just Dave and Rick.
